Just spent all afternoon on Deal seafront, and it was very moving.

I really got a new respect for the Army from it, in 1989 Deal was hit by a terrorist attack by the IRA, the Barracks at the time was a School for the Musical army of the Royal navy.

These Soilders where kids school leavers the age of 16 years, and when the Vicar started reading the names i had Lochlan in my arms, and i had tears on my cheeks as i imagined what there parents must have suffered, then i thought about the Lads out there now serving and really did choke me up.

I really did gain a new respect for them today deeply deeply moved, and what fantastic musicians they are.

Well over 5000 people there today:clap:

Oi Royal, what instrument do you play then? (A guaranteed flash from a bootneck).

RM Band beating the retreat is the business.

My daughter has been in the RM Band for 5 years, Pompey and now Plymouth, I never tire of seeing and hearing the performances, but of course there is serious side, she spends 50% of her time doing military training and the band are almost always deployed in support of the commandos as base security and medical squadron in Bastion most recently.... I am a very proud Father.

I was going to start a thred some time ago about armed forces day which was held in Plymouth this year, it was a great and emotional day made better by the RM Band they are also doing an outdoor concert in Plymouth barracks soon which should be good.

I've mentioned this before, but I'll tell the dit again. On returning from deployment on Invincible in 04, it was to be my last Procedure Alpha entering Pompey. We had a Bootie Band onboard, & I had shared a few jars with over the previous few months with the Bandmaster down the WO/Chiefs Mess.
We lined the decks & the band came up the aircraft lift & promptly struck up GOSBTS just as we passed the Still & West. Absolutely marvellous scenes!
God bless the RM Band!

I was sent to Deal Barracks after that bombing. To guard the camp, as it was believed the press may try to get into the barracks so they could get a story about lack of security. It was one eerie place.

In times of war the Royal Marines Band become stretcher bearers. They have picked up there fair share of casualties over the years.

Used to love our RM band on the old Ark Royal...
At sea, they would perform the usual military band stuff, but also concerto's, Rock, Soul....all sorts...
Whenever we arrived in foreign harbour they played Thunderbirds which always sounded wicked......The lion sleeps tonight was another they played often...
Beat the retreat is hard to beat... well, not for them...but you know...

Why did you get respect for the ARMY from watching the ROYAL MARINES?! Surely you should have got respect for the Marines?
To most laymen "the army" covers all sorts of people who serve on our behalf.

Then 'most laymen' are very wrong!

Oh yes, try going in the Navy Inn on the Barbican in Plymouth and tell the commandos you may come across that they are in the Army.... lol.... that would be funny to see.
