One of my grandchildren has just had to pay £1.12p for his birthday card as my wife sent it without thinking about it being a large letter so the postage wasnt sufficient.

My step-mother did this. Mind you, another time she forgot to put any kind of stamp on the envelope. And last year the postage was correct, but she didn't write anything in the card.

Whatever, I blame senility, not Royal Mail.

Did Clintons or wherever you bought the card let you have it for a reduced price for no other reason than you didn't think to look at the price and handed over a pound for a card costing more

I received some A4 mail yesterday and didn't have to pay any extra.

Mind you, the people who posted it had put a 'Large 2nd' stamp on the envelope.

I think this is the way round avoiding the charge.

Sorry to hear this, but to be fair most card companies put on the back of the card if the postage is letter or large letter.

Though at the same time, I can't understand why RM wants to pursue this kind of surcharge, but then not bother cancelling most of the stamps that go through the system

Brilliant.
So according to you what RM should have done upon changing the system, was to cancel the millions of stamps still in circulation.
Then what?
Refund everybody.
Do a stamp returns scheme.
Have a stamp amnesty.

I think what they should have done is change the system, tell everyone through a little booklet, and work with post specific companies to get the message across.
