Like all our denationalised industries, it’s turning into a pile of poo. Shame for the people working there, because I think they really care about the business.

It's the usual problem with a utility that is sold off. They can't maintain a service AND pay shareholders so something has to give and that is service levels. Happened across almost everything that was sold off in order to fund brief tax cuts. I fully expect a slimmed down Royal Mail that will collect from fewer postbox locations and deliver maybe twice a week....also fully expect a ramped up service for those willing to pay extra on certain items.

A pedant points out that Royal Mail and Post Office have been entirely separate for more than a decade. They’re essentially competing against each other in certain areas now too.

The results of the Ofcom review into the future of the postal service are due on Thursday, so we’ll get an interesting steer on the likely future.

Hard to tell what the service is like round my way as, I’m sure as most people these days, the vast majority of stuff that would have come through snail mail now comes online.
Only stuff I have specifically requested, letters from my gran. and the odd poll card comes through the letterbox these days.

Nothing I’m expecting seems to be delayed.

I can’t prove it as I am not in all the time but I am convinced we only get 3 deliveries a week anyway so can’t see any difference.

It was my local post office moving into a shop where there were fewer counters, bigger queues and a more awkward location that meant I started using Evri instead of Royal Mail for parcels. I'm probably not the only one so it's interesting to know Post Office and Royal Mail are competitors.

Post Office have now started selling DPD and Evri services as well as Royal Mail products.

In terms of how RM competes with PO, it is largely through their Click & Drop platform, which allows customers to purchase postage (and get a free collection from home) instead of going to the PO to do so. The benefit for RM is obviously not having to pay any commission or similar to PO.

I'll never use EVRI again! As Hermes they stole [lost] my laptop I sold for £400 on eBay and compo was a mere £20 - thieving bastards.

At least with Royal Mail 24 & 48 the compo is £150 - plus, I suspect their staff are generally more trustworthy ....

wasnt that because you didnt pay extra for the higher protection for an expensive item I had exactly the same with them on an xbox that I sent, but I couldnt really argue as I sent it standard protection for £20 so had no real argument (other than their delivery driver was a thieving bastard - as you say)

Agreed - I went through a spell of selling some old designer clothes bits on Vinted - the buyer pays for and chooses the service. One of the more expensive bits (a jumper sold for £120) got ‘damaged in transit’ and was destroyed apparently. Luckily Vinted reimburse both parties but to this day the only thing that never arrived

They aren’t private. 100% owned by the Government which means you, me and everyone else. I don’t see it surviving. When the NHS catches up with the 21st century and stops sending letters we will hardly receive anything by post.

I really can't see the problem with RM going to 2/3 days a week deliveries. Is there really any possible justification for sending a person to every address in the UK every day in 2024 with the amount of actual mail and so many ways to get things delivered urgently
