Given my dotage myself and Mrs Hut plan this as on the to do list when we retire.

I would have thought pre-booking a hotels is a total no no, surely the idea is to pull up for the night at your own leisure.

Couldn't agree more with you Beachy. A mate & myself hired a car & hooned around the highways & byways of Texas a few years ago, & there was NEVER a problem finding a place to stay during the three weeks we were there. Even managed to do a bit of the old Route 66 when we went up to Amarillo!

Just go for it poidy. You'll have a blast; & the folk you'll meet on your journey will show you just what hospitality is all about - even if many of the motels & bars will make you wonder why the f*** you ever chose 'em in the first place! The thing is, you'll be on the road the next day where a new adventure awaits. Marvelous stuff. :)

ps I'm actually feeling bloody jealous of you now.

The old Route 66 through Arizona will take you to many old out of the way places that most tourists never see but are still as they were in the routes heyday. There are numerous places to stay, many old and new, and the highway in most parts is no more than a single lane road in the middle of nowhere. It will show you the difference between today's America and the America of the past. Found the people to be very friendly everywhere, the English are well liked.

I did Chicago to St Louis ten years back. Some bits are interesting, but much of the time you're on the regular highways. Have also done bits in Arizona, but nothing dramatic there.... .
No nothing to see in Arizona. There's a canyon thing, but already seen Devils Dyke, so no interest there. Monument Valley? Sedona? Meteor crater? No, in Arizona - just keep your foot on the gas and head straight through it.

Would echo this and Beach Hut - there's plenty of places to stay en route.. we never had a problem, and it also then gives you the freedom to maybe cover a bit more ground if you felt like it and then having an easier drive the next day. Would not book any hotels apart from maybe first night after landing in Chicago and last night in LA.
Money-wise: we didn't do 5* but it was hardly backpacking either and it came to about 2.5k with trips and beer money included!
Drop me a PM if you want any other details.
