Does anyone know how long rounder records has been at it's current location I remember buying a UB40 7inch single ( don't slow down ) there in 1981

40 plus years. It has only ever existed in the current location..and they celebrated their 40th a couple of years ago.

In some respects it's a shame they are moving, but I do think it is for the better. Onwards and upwards.

I've always thought that Rounder Records clientele is more "North Laine" than "The Lanes" so possibly a shrewd move. I'd guess the rents are cheaper too.

I'm assuming they have a loyal customer base who will happily take the switch in their stride (literally, I suppose).

Used to like that shop when down in Brighty area. Part of the 'retail furniture'.

Being near the station will suit me for my visits back...can have a nose on matchday (late) mornings.

Good point. Whatever they are selling though, it's not really the market Rounder desire. Personally I do not even spare a second for the other shops in the square where they are located. I feel Trafalger Street will have many more record buying punters.

Given that beer shop is over the road and The Albert is at the top this generally positive move does come with certain concerns though

Trafalgar Street and Sydney Street have historically been Vinyl Central for me.

My first pay cheques as a 16 year-old were spent browsing and flicking in the musty basements and shops of Vinyl Demand, Wax Factor, Across The Tracks - and all the six-week record shops usually run by Piers and Mick The Hump - searching for soul and mod records.

Happy days. :)

Are you suggesting I'm a bit scruffy?

I still pine for Essential Records.

However I'm in the Trafalgar Street area a lot more than I am ever in the Lanes so this is good news for me.

You might be able to help me here Alan. I recall a very small record store at the end of a very short row of shops. I'd typically walk from the station, turn down a road (could have been Trafalgar) and the row would be on the left and the shop was on the right. As I say, very small and I remember buying records by Honey Bane and Bow Wow Wow cassettes in there so we are talking very early 80s I guess. Any idea what this was called?

I remember the old HMV store, the old Virgin store, Attrix records, the shop I have just mentioned but cannot rmember the name of and Rounder. I also used to go to a chart shop in Lewes; it is still there but now sells classical music. Noise and Rondo in Newhaven. Can you believe Newhaven had two record shops? Noise was brilliant. I used to order old punk 7"s in there, and get very excited when I went to collect them; I would blow all my pocket money in one go in this shop.

You are of course correct, and I think this is a very positive and shrewd move.

I don't. But I do know the exact one you mean. Tiny place; it was the last shop before the Pelham Street car park exit. It's a coffee and sandwich shop now. Redcross Street, I think.

It's one of those with the musty basements I was thinking of run by Piers and Mick the Hump that lasted for about six months before scooting off somewhere else along Sydney Street.

That's the baby. I liked it in there.

They were good days. All I ever used to do was buy music and watch the Albion. 30 plus years later and I'm still at it.

I was in Rounder on Sunday , didn't notice anything about moving , but agree that Trafalgar Street would be a far better location ...

On the subject of old record shops , does anyone remember the curmudgingly old sod who had the shop in Trafalgar St opposite Sydney St ???
