Roughest Pubs in Brighton

Let's be honest there aren't really any pubs that are rough. Some may look it but they aren't really. Some pubs will go through short periods where certain groups will go in them and make it uncomfortable but with a good landlord that can be sorted out. I don't envy the job of the landlord in these situations though.

Not really any rough ones in Brighton, agreed. Bit like trouble at football, it has gone the way of the Dodo except for a few random flare ups and a small group of idiots here and there.

There's some depressing boozers around though. For varying reasons. Some look too depressing to even go in. The Blind Busker always looks godawful and I've never brought myself to go in purely from th elook of the pub and the smokers outside.

I resisted going into the Horse & Groom (the Doom & Gloom as it was known locally) on Southover for years, one Sunday evening myself and the former Mrs popped in to find them having a good old fashioned Knees up with the piano going and pearly Kings & Queens having a sing song. Had a great evening. Never went back.

I always found The Crescent near Powis Sq mighty depressing even though I went in there quite a lot due to it being a min from my front door.

I find most pubs up in Kemptown really depressing. Usually either tarted up to the wine bar max or run into the ground with the exception perhaps of the Jolly Farmer (?) I think it was called. That was nice.

there used to be a rough-ish pub at the 7 dials, rough as in clientele completely out their boxes, can't remember the name, but think it's The Couch now and more of a wine bar ... not that I've been in there.

Wasn't it The Rabbit at one point? On the corner. Blokes used to dart between there and the bookies across the road until they ran out of cash. Depressing hole. Nobody has ever been able to make a go of that pub. It used to have a machine in the bogs dispensing porn DVD's. Classy. :shootself

Now the French Horn (for about last 2/3 years). Did a serviceable pint of Harveys when I went in there last a few months back but also smells like a pet shop. Weird boozer.

Was this pub called The Compton? Compton Arms?
I lived at the Dials 1990-92 and I'm sure that was The Compton, the pub seemed popular with Irish drinkers back then.

That's it. Was called that when i moved up around there in 98. Can't recall when it changed hands but it was a dive for quite a while after that. It's trouble is that there has always been far nicer pubs around the Dials. And of course, no decent outside area just a pavement on the main road and corner.

Thanks, i haven't been down that road for many years.
I see you mentioned The Crescent, Powis Square in a post above, I used to drink in there when I lived at the Dials, it was a good friendly pub back then.

It's never been unfriendly in my time either. A nice pub but there's something about it for me i found depressing. Don't know why really, just never felt that relaxed in there.

Was the Richmond ever regarded as a rough pub? Went to see 999 in the venue upstairs once and it ended in a massive fight between the punks and the skinheads!

As did your wife's when she booted you out eh!

She didn't nibble, we couldn't stand the sight of each other by the end , it was mutual I couldn't wait to be free of her , you admitted that your bird walked out and left you in a shit pub holding a slice of Manky pizza whilst you were struggling to hold back the tears , bit of a difference :lolol:

Feeling alright with the crew. Good band 999.
What year was this?

I think The Richmond had a Rock 'N' Roll night late 70s, I remember some older lads that lived where I grew up getting chased by some Teds outside the Richmond.
