Roughest Pubs in Brighton

Has anyone ever had the misfortune of drinking at the walkabout?

Nowt wrong wi' Walkabout. Always full of fit as young backpackers, happy smiling efficient barstaff and tis the drinking hole of choice pre-Brighton Centre gigs. You can phone up the Centre on the day, find out what time the band is due on (they ALWAYS appear on time, even Black Grape did) so you can plan your run to perfection, leaving Walkabout five minutes before band's due on, none of that squalid messing about trying to get served in the wholly inadequate bars in the Centre, which is even worse than trying to get served in The Sportsman.

The Walkabout..chain is shit..went in one at fulham away..and they said i had to go just 'coz i had a pint of coooider.UNACCEPTABLE.

although the hikers can be a little rough and ready it's a good pub and absolutely solid Albion. Been there with my 9 yr old to ask for a glass of water and we couldn't have had a warmer reception (he was in his Albion top).

The franklin is IMO a shithole full of plastic Chelsea and man u fans. Martha gunn is rough butonce again a good local.

Has anyone ever had the misfortune of drinking at the walkabout? Also the pub opposite the Amex/law courts/benefit office and the one up the road are rough as.

Spread eagle was the worst Iv been in but the bat and ball must get a special mention if only for how desperate the clientele are. Been in the duke of beaufort(?) at the top of Hanover for an England game and that got a bit tasty.

Wellington is a bit basic but walked past it after the man city game and was chocka full of Albion so won't have a bad word said.

Always thought the social club at the lewes road/elm grove shops looked pikey too.

But didnt have the social club at the lewes road/elm grove shops in mind.

G P indeed, good lad always up for a laugh and one of the Bosun lads. i believe he sort of switched to following chelsea but was at the fans united game v donny at Pissfield.

Continuing on, but away from main topic, GP and I had great fun one bank holiday when we 'joined' a large group of cockynees in the hungrey years and led them into all sorts of mayhem, taking care to keep ourselves out of getting knicked. he also finished walking off with their flag and, i beieve, a bell, which was somewhat important to them.

A few years later, he pulled up one day as i was walking alkong and took me for a drive. he was hammering it along various roads in rural Sussex and i was doing my best not to look scared! I believe he later went on to do stock car driving.

Good lad, always up for a laugh but always playing close to the wind. hope he's still around.

To think that modern teams now need bands to get the fans going

What I really liked about him, was that he would "call" a chant spot on.

talking of social clubs the nalgo club off edward street was a laugh. started off when we were at school going to play snooker in there and then mickey lea's dad took it over and it went properly west.

I must add The Winner to the list. I used to drink in there and still get a good welcome from the older locals, but there can be the odd moment in there.

Anyone who thinks the Hikers is rough should stick to wine bars - it's about as rough as a creche. As Buzzer and Freddie G have said, it's a decent local boozer - and a good Albion one too. It's my local and there's never trouble there.

The Bevendean was all right too. That used to be my local when I was growing and there was never trouble there - great for buying knock-off gear.

Someone said earlier that Brighton doesn't really have rough pubs and I think that's about right. I've been in pubs in London, Liverpool, Leeds and Glasgow when I was sure whether I'd get out alive: I can't think of any in Brighton that fit that description.

His house burnt down while we were at wembly for the Notts County game, 30,000 people to back his story that he was out of town at the time.

you serouise?? This used to be a local of mine and always had a 'reputation' but half the people who drank in there were on their pensions and they was rarley trouble. (being 23 im only speaking about the last 6-8 years)

The main one for problems in HH was always the sussex which i belieive is now a carpet shop and flats

Don't know about recent times, I left HH in '86. I was talking more early 80's. It was my local too.

I used to know the guy that ran the Sussex at one time.

I did know Mo, I knew her when she was a customer back in the 70s, I did go back there when she was the Landlady, that was probably about 6ish years ago, always do try to pop in there when I go back to Brighton, but the place has changed so much over the years.

The Imperial in Broadfield Crawley probably beats most pubs in Brighton for being rough.Don't go there in a group on a friday night or sat.

Now The Chimney house and all you'll get this christmas eve are the lezzers frolocking as is a lesbain pub though no one knows why!!!!
