Quite a few thousand. They close off many areas of the ground. I'm not sure it is their ground is it, as it is an athletics track?

If Disley's ankle is broken there really should be an investigation into the condition of the pitch and why on earth the ref let the match be played - most dangerous league pitch I've seen in years because of the way it was cutting up and leaving divots the size of pot-holes

Lewes
Just seconds after the final whistle there was a loud shout of "fuckin shit". One of best match summaries for a while IMO.

I think that's very extreme and over the top. Sunday league players play on much worse than that and don't suffer bad injuries every game, and similarly players can suffer serious injuries on a carpet of a pitch. Phil Jagielka has been out about 10 months when LANDING dodgily on the Goodison Park turf with noone near him. A good example to counter with, I thought.

To be honest, I don't see the relevance. I see what you're saying, I just don't agree with it. Whether you're a pro or a drunken hack, the pitch is the pitch and you play the game in the same way. Injuries happen, it's a contact sport afterall. In this case, he's slid along the ground and got his foot trapped. That could happen on any pitch, obviously the state of this one didn't help, but it doesn't make it unsafe or dangerous.

Having watched videos of older matches, the pitch they played on tonight would have been considered veyr good quality back in the day!

To me the main difference is that professional football is exactly that, professional, thus the pitches should be better, the players should be better, the officials should be better ect, pitches like that are equally dangerous for Sunday league and the professional game but you would have thought pitches like that not be in the game any more, back in the day all pitches were like that so players just got used to it, and with all the money in the game nowadays you would have thought all playing fields would be up to standards.

"back in the day" (my day as it happens) players wore boots that had thicker and less flexible soles & instep and protected the ankle. You could (and did) play in much worse conditions than would be permitted today. Modern equipment has changed aspects of the game almost beyond recognition but has also increased some of the risks, particularly on a "bad" pitch. A professional (and my emphasis is very much on the word professional) player risks losing his whole career and if the pitch is the cause it is hard to justify - not least to the insurers.

I do have a lot of sympathy with the argument - "we" do play in much worse conditions than the pros and take many more risks in the name of pleasure. But "we" are not professionals and don't have anything like as much to lose.

Did you see the highlights of the Wigan versus Spurs game...the pitch at the JJB was bloody awful, on one attack two Spurs players lost their footing and fell over because it was so bad!

Sadly there is not alot you can do, you cant fine teams for having a shit pitch as in the lower leagues most team cant afford to relay it that often
