High up on the South Downs.
Surrey were a dreadfully poor team last season. And this from a county who dominated cricket 7 years earlier. If Adams hadn't got Rory he would have looked completely incompetent. As it is, I suspect that Rory will be a Surrey player but not their captain by mid July 2010.

In the Twenty20 Group Stage game against Middlesex (The rain affected one..), didn't RHB and Muzza get us off to a quality start?

RHB, can you see a 22year old with 8 1st class appearances behind him captaining that rabble, including stoppy Ramps and Nel with his alto ego Gunther.
He was Adams 4th choice behind Keys, Van Jarsfeld and Mckenzie but they all said no.

Its a big ask with the burden of expectation IMHO

This is very disapointng. I was hoping that we would be able to convince him that his best career path would be staying here. Surrey has not been a breeding ground for international players for some time and that is obviously his ambition.

Lets hope that someone can step up to the plate to replace him because he had become a very important player for us

A player with a lot of promise and potential.

It is way too early for him to be captain of a CC side though, bad career move.

Cant agree he was a 'very important' playet to Sussex, was already a very useful one dayer with potential to become a good four day player is more like it?

My concern is we have lost Dwayne Smith and possibly Luke Wright from the one day side plus we haven't replaced Rana or Lewry in the four day side.

As for re-entering the vipers nest at the Oval at 22 with 8 first class games behind you as Captain, you are either very brave or very stupid!

i think he was important. His bowling was vital, as well as his fielding. His batting was up there with the best in our team, especially in one dayers. As you say the one day team looks weak without Dwayne, RHB and Wright. Not sure Monty and Anyon will be a replacement for any of those three. A lot of pressure on specialists batsmen and bowlers, rather than all rounders which is what our team was full of in the past couple of years. A very different approach indeed !

As for RHB being captain, it is bold or stupid, but The Albion have done the same with Poyet - who has had even less experience than RHB and is in a higher position. if it works, fair play. They have done everything by the book. Shame he has gone, I thought he was brilliant

I think he'll do well as captain at surrey, he seems fairly thick skinned so I'm sure he'll be fine. Big loss for the good guys, but I think we'll still do well next year.

Good luck RHB.

Looking at this from a different angle, had Adams got the post he wanted at Sussex, would RHB have left and more to the point would we not be in the position that i feel we are in that Adams i believe will come knocking again at Sussex.

Seems an odd one by Surrey, but anyone who seriously imagined a 22year old Sussex fringe player was ever going to turn down the chance to join his home team, as it were, probably the biggest/richest/most arrogant club in county cricket, for a decent salary, the captaincy and a guaranteed starting place, is deluded.

We'll miss his six-hitting for sure. Nash and Yardy are just as good as fill-in spin bowlers and much more complete batsman too. Give me specialists over bits and pieces cricketers any day of the week. Don't think wages was ever an issue here.
