Everton's Wayne Rooney has handed in a transfer request as Newcastle and Manchester United fight out a £25m battle for his signature.

Manchester United are expected to make an increased bid on Friday after Newcastle had a £23.5m offer rejected.

Everton insisted Rooney make his request to leave Goodison Park formal before sanctioning his departure.

And reports on Merseyside are suggest Rooney now favours Newcastle aheadmof an Old Trafford switch.

The 18-year-old England striker said: "I hope Everton's fans will understand my decision."

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson earlier revealed his desire to land Rooney and believes he remains in pole position ahead of Newcastle.

But Newcastle remain confident, and it is understood that a move to St James' Park appeals strongly to Rooney, although Ferguson can be expected to conduct a fierce fight to land him.

What about Everton, they are relegation candidates (well in the bunch) and if they dont get new talent in then they are f***ed.
Think I heard about a £20m cash injection AND with Rooneys sale then Moyes needs to do some serious buying to get them back to an above mid-table team, cos at the moment they are bottom 5 material IMO.

I dont care where Rooney goes as long as he gets back fit and does well for England, thats allt hat matters to me :)

I'm sure Everton fans will understand that the true blue Rooney doesn't want to stay in a relegation fight.
I'm sure they'd rather see him return in a Man U shirt.

Rooney's taking the piss by mentioning the supporters.

I hope he does whatever will make him better for England, but if I was an Everton fan, it would be worse than Jeffers; another "true blue" who couldn't wait to get away.

What was that t-shirt he had?

'Once a blue, always a blue'?

It's like kissing the badge. Players only do that so they remember who's paying them!

Everton will be wanting to get the deal done and money in the bank ASAP so that they will have time before the transfer deadline to get some new players in. The nightmare scenerio for Everton is they sell Rooney and then have have to wait till Jan 2005 to spend the money on new players.

His agent Paul Stretford is a greedy and manipulative man. He is also the king of PR cock-ups.

Why on earth has he advised Rooney to go on the transfer list? The bidding war is obvious - he will be sold anyway.

By requesting a transfer, all he has done is upset the Everton fans who have supported him since he was a boy.

Disgraceful.

The Everton board said he had to to show the fans that the club did NOT want him to go and that it was down to Rooney himself to hand in a transfer request, this shows the board we're not 100% keen on the sale but were sold to £££ at the end of the day.

Keep up Gunter. Everton refused to sell him until he handed in a transfer request.

Good - I got quite annoyed at that. A very very clever PR move by the club.

Stretford is still a manipulative tosser though!

Just heard on the news, Rooney said, "This is the hardest decision I've made in my life."

So what other difficult decision decision did he make?

Which minging whore shall I bang?
Which shell-suit do I wear?

Don't get me wrong, I think he's a great player; but he's not exactly endearing himself to the average supporter......especially Everton supporter I should imagine!
