Are you talking regular curriculum lectures, or those lectures where people visit the university to present their work? I don't recall anyone applauding regular lectures when I went. But the visiting lecturers did.

Always clapping after showings of 'Its a Wonderfull Life' when shown over Christmas at the Duke of Yorks, which I always think is affectionate. My mum and dad said it was common when they were young in the 50's and 60's.

Only film I have ever been in that was clapped at the end was Fahrenheit 9/11. Probably more acceptable to clap a documentry style film as opposed to something like Spiderman 3 or Pirates of the Caribbean.

I too saw Slumdog last night.
As much as I agree and would never clap. I was totally engrossed in the film, loving every second.
Therefore a small round of applause after 2 hours of pleasure is the least you can expect.

When I lived in the US the yanks used to go ape, hollering and cheering whenever a Bond trailer (above all others) came on the screen, which I understandably didn't mind.

I think its the collective realisation that the whole audience has shared a special moment. Watching a true masterpiece with an engrossed audience of 1200 saw a huge sustained applause for a couple of minutes at the end. That was the Empire, Leicetsre Square and the film was Schindler's List. I saw SL 3 times and the response at the end was the same every thime. Seen 1 or 2 other films that had applause but it also happens in Blockbuters or anything really spectacular sometime. I don't have a problem with it at all.

Why do cinemas sell confectionery and snacks in rustley bags? Some people just rustle their way through the whole damn film.

And worse, wankers that talk the whole way through. Totally selfish arseholes.

Try watching a film in the cinema in the states - it seems it is acceptable there for everybody to talk all the way through the film as if they are the only people there. I can honestly say that when I went to see Jurrasic Park there, I only heard about a fifth of the dialogue (in that instance not particularly missing much, except for Dicky Attenboroughs bad scottish accent)
