They've just done my roof. Cheaper than the other two quotes I had and very happy with the work that was done. Maybe they didn't like the look of your face.

Maybe but it doesn't help their business to piss off potential customers.

Hopefully in Ruislip you can find value.

Brighton and Hove over the years has become pretty expensive for many things. Dealing with trades, contractors and for example car repair specialists from Lancing, Peacehaven and Worthing, prices can be on another level (lower).

Cheers chap, a lot of the local roofers do work in London, it goes with their glossy websites

Woke up at 2am this morning to rain pouring in through roof.
Cut to the chase, it turns out the cement in lead gulley's, either side of apex, as per above image, has all but disintegrated.
My question is, what sort of price would I be looking at to repair gulley's, replacing rotten wooden facias.
Or completely removing apex and having it tiled over as one complete roof.
Thanks in advance

Replacing the cement in the valley isnt a big job, the fascia replacement slightly bigger job. Depends if you want just that front section done in wood or looking to have more done in uPVC, does it need seveval coats of paint etc.. But all in I would say you are looking at £800-£1k.

Looking at replacing the wood with upvc, less upkeep I guess.
The facias under apex are rotten from water damage.
Also looking at getting the whole apex removed, replacing with tiles as per rest of roof.
I've been told previously the apex's are or were an architects wet dream :thumbsup:

I need all my house's wooden bargeboards and soffits replaced. Hate getting up the ladder and patching up. I haven't got in any quotes but with scaffolding, materials, labour expecting a hit of around £10k.

The barge boards on the gable end only? Not a big job then.Defo £800 (fascias are what the gutters are attached to)

Yes architects like these kind of useless things, adds a 'interest' to the house they think. Without seeing the rafterr and how it is tied in, I would guesstimate £2k to remove it and repqalce with tiles.

Sounds good to me, cheers
Waiting for the inevitable scaffolding to appear

Feck me, you must live in a 6 bedroomed mansion for that price. Or use Anglian, lol.

Why are you taking photos from your neighbours bedroom?

Would not have believed this approach up to until recently. Some friends of my mother in law had a neighbour whose fence had sustained damage after high winds. First quote was £800. Not unsurprisingly they turned it down and job was done well by next tradesman for £200. If the job is too small for you and/or you are too busy why on earth would you not say so? Deliberately over quoting will surely only damage your reputation?

We’ve moved into this house in 2006 and wanted some huge leylandii felled and taken away.

A gardener who was with BHCC park’s department (he seemed to be moonlighting, as he was arranging initial visits and quotes for private work during working hours) quoted £2,500.

Whilst another trees man from South Heighton (Newhaven) priced it at less than a thousand. We went with him.

A similar story with car specialists such as for reconditioned radiators.

Step a few miles outside Brighton and Hove along the coast, and many things are far cheaper.

Had all my soffits, facias, guttering replaced with uPVC by a local firm, from memory around £2k. They did it without scaffolding! (4 bed detached in Eastbourne).

That's interesting. I'm in a 3 bed semi in Eastbourne and for the same job of soffits, facias, guttering with scaffolding I was quoted £2,100. Four other quotes all came in around £900. Strangely the same company also quoted us for windows and they were pretty much in line with all the other quotes. Can't quite work out the big disparity on the roof work.

Some people that fit facias and soffits just fix the new plastic to the old timber.

I had all my facias, soffits and guttering replaced and the fitter stripped all the old stuff away and added extra timber supports before fitting the new plastic.
He also checked all the roof felt at the first row of roof tiles ( just above the gutter ) he said the roof felt often rots there, he fitted some sort of plastic trays to cover the felt edges.
The fitter was recommended by 2 people I know and the job was first class.

Off the top off my head it it could be 1 with scaffolding and the others without. Or one is using cappit upvc over the existing timbers and ther other is doing a full replacement. The capppit is fine imo if the timbers underneath are ok. Should be fully spec in the works.

Cappit is normally about 9mm thick and replacement fascias around 18mm thick.

Depends on the state of the wood imo, if the wooded fascias are in good condition then covering it is fine as that stops the weather from getting to it and you are fixing somethng to a sounds surface. Felt does often go thats true, not a big job fitting new sarking felt on a roofline and often has to be done when fitting cappit anyway as that brings the fascias out by 9mm and can mean the roof tiles don't then overhang the gutters.
