So many fantastic films; a comic who could also add nuance to his performances and handle drama. A true talent.

Even his episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway is just brilliant

Rip. Depression is a terrible thing.

I'm sure I wasn't the only person to see images of Mrs Doubtfire in this mornings papers, which led to thinking about another news story which broke over the last day or two.

Truly devastated by the news this morning, and I don't mind admitting I shed a tear or two. From Mork & Mindy when I was a kid, his stand up comedy shows, through to his numerous, & diverse, big screen roles - I loved everything he did. Will be sadly missed :(

Yes. I was compelled to, by the pre-qualification that the term Genius is overused, and was then used in an instance to describe a man that did funny voices and spoke fast, or sometimes in slow motion.
You weren't compelled to, you're just an idiot.
Why would you feel you have to bother? There's a lot of people on this thread that would disagree with you and are saddened by the waste of a talented life - time and a place, it's worth saying again

He was a bit marmite for me: I appreciate he was funny to some but I found him highly irritating in mork and mindy and any of the kids films he was in (including mrs doubtfire)...... however I also found him an extremely moving actor in good will hunting; one hour photo; insomnia; dead poets.

Shocked and saddened that such a talented, rich, loved, family man could not find another solution.

Also saw a clip from Greatest Dad this morning - truly chilling to watch him say "Remember, suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems". But how do you convince someone else of that? (I have failed at this, personally).

If doing funny voices was what made someone a genius then Adam Sandler would be considered an all-time great. There was much more to his performances than that

Fine actor. Great shame. It would appear it doesn't matter how much money you have our how famous you are, depression is a very lonely, dark place.

Hearing this news has made me quite emotional and I am not normally prone to outbursts of emotion. I think this can be put down to the fact that Williams had that rare quality of the truly great actors in that he could reach in and touch your soul such was the power of his performances. Dead Poets Society has to be considered one of the greatest films ever made.

RIP Captain.

I agree. One of those rare and versatile actors that are genuinely funny, but can also give a moving and serious performance. A true legend and star of some of my favourite films. RIP :( Way too soon

Woke up to this today, horrible news who stared in many childhood films that I loved. Mrs Doubtfire and Hook both great films.

RIP

With death replacing sex as the taboo for the 21st Century, this speech perfectly expresses the inevitability of our own mortality and the importance of making a difference with one's life:

"They're not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you, their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because, you see gentlemen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen, you hear it? - - Carpe - - hear it? - - Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary."
