Before Mr Putin, AKA Mister Genocide unleashes a nuclear apocalypse on us, I'm dying to find out what your favourite TV interpretation of Robin Hood is.
The choice is as follows:-
1955 - 1959 The adventures of Robin Hood, starring Richard Greene, Alan Wheatley and Patricia Driscoll.
1975 - The legend of Robin Hood, starring Martin Potter, Diane Keene and Paul Darrow.
1984 - 1986 Robin Of Sherwood, starring Michael Praed, Jason Connery and Judi Trott.
2006 - 2009 Robin Hood, starring Jonas Armstrong, Keith Allen, Lucy Griffiths and Richard Armitage.
The original series was a bit before my time. I only have a vague recollection of seeing some black and white episodes.
TLROH. I loved the way Paul Darrow sneered his way through the series, playing The Sheriff of Nottingham. He was Avon in Blake's 7, a crap science fiction programme that I was somehow compelled to watch when it ran between 1978 - 1981. I was probably waiting for a decent scrip or a plausible location to materialise. Most of the episodes were either filmed on a beach, or in a chalk quarry. Getting back TLORH, I can't deny that I fancied Diane Keene, who played Maid Marian.
ROS didn't exactly do it for me. The soundtrack was by Clannad, which back in the day was quite pleasant. I could never quite get my head around how Robin Hood metamorphosed from Michael Praed to Jason Connery. They didn't look remotely similar, and I think I lost interest.
RH. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed this when it came out. My girlfriend and I found it compelling when we saw it recently. Keith Allen was superb in his role as The Sheriff of Nottingham, and whilst the story lines were implausible, it was great entertainment. Brighton's own Lucy Griffiths played Maid Marian with great aplomb. If I had to be critical, whilst Richard Armitage was superb as Guy of Gisborne, and his endless battles to outsmart Robin Hood were immensely entertaining, why did they have to choose an actor that was a dead ringer for Bryan Ferry to be Robin Hood's main adversary ? I would have done it for a fraction of the fee ! Perhaps being only 5'6", and as blind as a bat without my glasses would have precluded me from landing the role. I don't think there were opticians around in the middle ages.
