Potter hardly played Colwill at the Albion so unlikely to be slotting into Chelsea’s team unless he has game time here and looks up to the step up?

I think he should be sent back because he is ‘Chelsea’. He shouldn’t get any development minutes from us now, we should not be getting Potter’s players up to speed in the EPL for him.

or look at it as Chelsea are planning to move away from the loan model and sell assets on and push to sign him properly

I was aware he was a “good guy”, but I’ve read things this morning that cement this firmly, and which I am sure will have made him attractive as a manager to the club alongside his football qualities.

He’s obviously a man of principle, and an article from the Daily Mail (sorry) on Facebook described him as brave.
- he initially would not leave the Ukraine out of loyalty to the fans.
- he eventually wouldn’t leave until he was sure all his “frightened Brazilian” players were safe - he seems to have left at the very last moment.
- he refused to talk to Bologna about their managerial vacancy because they had sacked their previous coach, who was undergoing treatment for leukaemia for the second time in three years.

All of that seemed a bit Potteresque - BUT he is his own man, a decent man for a decent club. :albion2:
Also wouldn’t entertain Bmuff Russian connection. Nothing like Potter who couldn’t run out of the door fast enough.

Zerbi is the sort of man that if Caicedo wants to leave in Jan - will pull him into his office - and verbally smash him to pieces.

More steel than "go whenever and to whoever you want - we respect everyone else massively" Potter.

Comes across as a man of loyalty - rare in this game.

Also spoke out strongly against the Super League, and even discussed with his then chairman about not playing Milan ahead of their fixture.

Erm, it's in the clubs announcement that he was the only one spoken to as he was target no 1 and was interested in the job.

Why speak to anyone else?

TBF they are unlikely to say we got a bit desperate and went for 4th on the list RDZ because the top three turned us down. Talking to and who they approached are two different things. Still I think it is a super appointment he must believe he can get us into Europe which is good enough for me.

If they had spoken to anyone else pretty unlikely they would go public and say the opposite - would probably backfire very quickly.

If RDZ is going to bring any former player to Brighton, Marlon would surely be the most likely one. Brought him to Italy and then to Ukraine.

Yes, but they could have made enquiries with agents, who informed them that their client was unavailable currently, or had massive buyouts, and so they never spoke to them directly.

Indeed. You can choose to believe what they say and look forward, or keep looking for any bit of spin that’s been put on it.

As a huge fan of Italy, and Italian football when growing up, this makes me very happy to hear...Benvenuto!

Indeed! I knew there was something I’d left out that I meant to put in. He was vocal about the social importance of football.

From the Athletic (probably already posted, but anyway...):

The Athletic Daily
20 Sep 2022
Brighton's new head coach Roberto De Zerbi appears to tick all the same boxes predecessor Graham Potter did across his 40 months in charge.

It made sense to the hierarchy that if you had a successful appointment in Potter — who bases his playing style on controlling possession, with an ability to improve players and teams — why not choose somebody like De Zerbi, with a similar track record and principles, to maintain your club's upward trajectory?

Brighton owner-chairman Tony Bloom's data-driven and proactive recruitment policy had identified the 43-year-old Italian as an outstanding candidate among potential successors for the day Potter left, owing primarily to his work over the past four seasons with Sassuolo in Serie A and Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine.

A series of character references built up a comprehensive profile of De Zerbi's management style.

On September 8, when Potter's exit to Chelsea was confirmed, Bloom and his executive team made their move.

At the first meeting with De Zerbi, Bloom, chief executive Paul Barber and technical director David Weir were blown away by how much he knew about the evolution in playing style at Brighton under Potter, as well as the players he would have at his disposal.

From that moment, they didn't look beyond De Zerbi, who was a free agent after leaving Shakhtar in July following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. There was no cause to disturb other head coaches catching the eye with impressive work at their clubs, such as Kjetil Knutsen at Bodo/Glimt in Norway or Bo Svensson of Germany's Mainz.
