Sanchez has proved more erratic than I had hoped after some encouraging performances. Always had too much of a casual air about him that, being a goalie, always had me worried. We have been lucky to have Steele behind the scenes and deserved his chance that he has taken with both hands.
We have a lot of keepers under development who want opportunities to learn from the seniors. Big Bob‘s attitude has cost him a place in the squad. We have a new first team replacement. Sanchez will either sit around without a game or be on his way. I don’t think we will let him go for peanuts - it’s not how we normally operate. It’s in his international interests to get regular football - it won’t be with us.

This one is going to run and run. I have a lot of sympathy for Sanchez, even if many others don't.

If in the middle of last season you had set up a poll ranking Sanchez versus other prem league goalkeepers for his distribution, I think most people would have rated him quite highly. There would have been quite a few, too many close shaves playing it out for my liking comments, but the same would likely still apply to Jason Steele. RDZ made his decision that Steele would be better and stuck to it. On balance it added an extra dimension to our game, but there were also a couple of league games where we took a bit of a thumping. Sanchez made that awful blunder against Palace, but would maybe have backed himself to have saved some of the goals that Steele let in and may therefore have been disappointed not to regain his place in the side.

I said at the time that this decision would mean we were likely to be looking for another keeper. It isn't just Sanchez who is impacted. I am sure Carl Rushworth is also wondering about his future. If Rushworth is sent out on loan, where can he spend the season developing into the sort of keeper RDZ wants, especially with a £20m younger keeper just having been signed. If they keep him at the club and work extensively with him on his distribution, will that really benefit his all round development as a keeper?

I can empathise that it must have been very frustrating for him. But he is a PROFESSIONAL footballer paid an obscene amount of money, and he effectively threw his toys out the pram and went on strike because he got a bit frustrated. It's pathetic- none of our other players have behaved like that, and if I was RDZ he would never play for my team again. Having characters like that in a team detriments everyone, regardless of how good they are. We should set a sensible price and sell him, and if there are no takers then he can either sit on the bench or go out on loan, with someone else paying his wages.

On the other hand we aren't known for keeping unhappy players, soon after Trossard started playing up after his return from the World Cup, he was on his way to Arsenal. It helped of course that we received a large wedge for him.

All of which may be true and may come to pass. He is still a very good keeper and I hope we can get a good deal, which suits all parties.

You only read that theory on here. And that theory is flawed as only one of the Everton goals could be could be put down as a Steele error.

Sanchez got dropped for Steele after the latter played in the FA Cup win against Stoke. I think that was the game to which Steele referred when he was on Radio 5's Monday Night Club and said that RDZ had predicted, before the game, the exact passage of play that led to a chance on goal. I can't find a live llnk, but I think it started with the goalie. He picked Steele from then on, perhaps because his minds eye sees his team attacking more than defending.

Sanchez took his place on the bench from then, playing in the cup games. His playing strike didn't come after his decent game at Wembley, but after Steele's (and everybody else's) awful game against Everton. My assumption is that Sanchez watched that game and assumed that his chance must come in the next game away at Arsenal. That's the first game he wasn't on the bench, so he obviously didn't take it well that he was wrong. He perhaps can't be blamed for thinking after that, that his future lay somewhere else. He can be blamed for subsequently refusing to be in the squad, but RDZ has said nothing more than he picks the team and that the decision not to take part was Sanchez's. He hasn't said that there was a row and he did say that he'd be welcome if he made himself available.

Goalkeepers are, of course, different and we don't know whether Sanchez has said that he won't play or whether he has perhaps said that he doesn't feel in the right mindset to play. Jason Steele has spoken eloquently of the, perhaps unique, mental strain of the position and I'm not going to condemn Sanchez without knowing everything. His time here looks to be over. He's still a young bloke. He'll have his regrets and you'd hope, on a human level, that he copes and learns from what's happened.

Yes, of course it is - but even the manager has to be aware of all the factors. Had De Zerbi rushed in and shoved Sanchez under the bus earlier, the backlash would have been huge. Even those now posing on their hind legs to proclaim that Sanchez was useless, couldn't catch a cross or make a save would also have been outraged, regardless of any denials now!
De Zerbi iis a clever - and ruthless - operator. The Crystal Palace drop gave him the minute that he wanted, and he took it. Clever man. Ruthless too.

As a result, Sanchez wants a move. Quelle surprise............................
