I recognise that in that instance the ball had not gone dead, so it would have been impossible to refer to incident to a 4th official by the ref himself but, having made the decision, the coach should be allowed to speak with his captain only to decide whether to challenge.

I think each coach should be allowed 2 challenges per match. In practice this would probably result in every penalty decision being reviewed and it would then put the referees in the spotlight even more. Hopefully, they'll then consult with their assistant referees more (should have been happening more anyway).

Did anyone think that Finnan was a bit stupid lunging towards the ball that way in the box?

yep and it was a sure fire penalty lunged at the ball and balked the player who was also going for the ball one of the only decisions the ref got right.:ohmy:

I also get the feeling if it was the other way around people wouldn't be anywhere near as fussed.
