Except the millions who have been life-long Labour voters, and still are. What with lockdown payments, the furlough scheme, and now these measures, Sunak is turning out to be probably the most socialist Chancellor we've ever had! Certainly in my lifetime ................

Not actually that difficult. Just pay it to those pensioners who already recieve other (means tested or disabiity related) welfare benefits in addition to the old age pension.

Great to see the tory's chose to repay this loyalty with their covid response.

Mind you I reckon there's several old folk taking the line "they might have let it rip through the care homes, they might have undermined lockdowns and because of this my wife and all my friends are dead, but my god it's the tories that make this country great and i'll be voting for them again."

The incentive is that the extractors can mitigate the additional tax by extracting more (as long as it's from UK oil/gas fields). Oil and Gas prices are set by the worldwide market, so our own policies won't do much for the overall price. And as long as we continue NOT to insulate our homes the demand stays the same.

I'm not saying Rishi's announcement isn't good news - just that the underlying problem needs fixing (and you don't fix it by incentivising MORE drilling for oil and gas).

i've seen some detail now, clever. end of day we need gas to provide the baseload energy until the wind forests and nuclear are built out. better that comes from north sea and onshore sources than abroad.

I don't need a £400 rebate. Even though my fuel bills have more than doubled I can absorb that if I must.

Why do I get the £150 via my council tax just because I live in a smaller house. Again I don't need it.

However I'm not going to turn it down if its offered.

They would be far better giving anything direct to those most in need through the benefits system - especially income support.

They must all be disappointed that Sunak is pursuing such a socialist line, then!

Plus also you have to accept, whether you like it or not, that many of those 70% (and no, I don't know the exact numbers any more than you do, but a lot) will have been life-long Labour voters (and probably will be again) who, much as they didn't like it, felt they had to vote Tory to protect the integrity of the referendum, which was under threat from all the other major parties.

Agreed. We're not ungrateful but like you have decent incomes to absorb much of the inflation that's going on at present. Would rather see a more targeted package at those who really need it, such as the many people we support in our weekly work in the local foodbanks near where we live who really are struggling. Still, glad to see the Chancellor take some much needed action.

It was the winter fuel allowance, which was quoted in one of the other posts I was replying to, that I was referring to.

gas producers (BP, Shell) are not the same as power generating utilities (SSE, Eon). the utility companies buy the gas at market price, making nothing more, many losing money and closed.
