I'm generally in support of not means testing public benefits, but bunging £300 to winter fuel allowance recipients, i.e. every single person over 65, seems to be completely shameless.
Not yet had a chance to read the detail, but it looks like energy companies are now massively incentivised to drill for new oil and gas from UK fields. From a Climate Change perspective this makes no sense. But obviously Rishi had to keep his mates happy somehow.

1. 9 days ago the Tory Government voted against labour's amendment for a windfall tax with a majority of 62. Now they've done a U-turn and brought it in. Absolute shambles. Try getting it right the first time - their political opponents called for this months ago.
2. And the day after the Sue Gray Report is published. Political expedience at its worst.
3. And it's been orchestrated to make Rishi - and not Boris - look like the good guy. Presumably part of a price Johnson is paying to rehabilitate Sunak after his unlucky Fixed Penalty Notice and the wife's taxes scandal a couple of weeks ago.
I am pleased the govt are doing something to help people and yes they could have gone further but I’m not convinced Labour would have been any more generous in their help . 7 /10 for the govt .
The worst Tory govt since Thatcher but there still isn’t really a viable alternative. Hopefully Kier will clean out all the extreme socialist worker types from Labour and then the party will be be middle ground and more electable .

I don't think I'd have ever expected the level of support that the Conservatives gave during Covid, far more than was probably needed (in hindsight) and now these amounts. It is quite an extraordinary level of support when you consider it against historical levels of support provided any previous Government of any political party.
Not shameless, but inefficient. Funds could be used better.I'm generally in support of not means testing public benefits, but bunging £300 to winter fuel allowance recipients, i.e. every single person over 65, seems to be completely shameless.
Except the millions who have been life-long Labour voters, and still are. What with lockdown payments, the furlough scheme, and now these measures, Sunak is turning out to be probably the most socialist Chancellor we've ever had! Certainly in my lifetime ...............They are mostly Tory voters, after all.....
Not actually that difficult. Just pay it to those pensioners who already recieve other (means tested or disabiity related) welfare benefits in addition to the old age pension.No-win situation
Does nothing, gets slammed
Does something, it's not enough or it's too expensive
Some payments not being means-tested (as with some of the Covid handouts) is wrong IMO but I guess (again as with Covid) it's urgent and there isn't time to put in place the systems, processes and controls to have a fairer handout.
they just got taxed 25% more so what incentive?
raise a point though, if we have more flexible approach to gas extraction we'd have cheaper energy. its expensive due to policy.
