As someone has said ruffians is french, and I any true English Brighton scallywag would deplore anything french after they even dare attack our great city in the past. This being the case you can not use this word maybe Rowdies or even scallywags, but ruffians im sorry but I am too jingoistic to use said word :shrug:

Rogues? Rapscallions, but that has French origins too i believe.

...some of my ancestors were called Ruff...not far from ruffian...and they were from Amberley...which last time I looked was in deepest darkest West Sussex, nowhere near France!
