Anybody know why when some CDs come up wit a 'japanese/gobbledygook' track listing when put into media player and if there is any way around it ?

It will be in the track name. Right click the track and goto properties and you'll see it in there I would have thought. You can manually change this.

It's happened to a few of mine. I right click and then edit and type in the track names. It's a bit time consuming but it does the job.

Maybe don't use Media Player. Songbird is one I could recommend

That's a good call, and to be fair, iTunes seems to do it more accurately than Media Player too.

there are programs you can download that will scan your songs and apply the correct ID3 tags to your files if you have just ripped them from a CD or the ID3 tags got corrupted and lost somehow when converting between file formats

Install Ubuntu and Banshee?

Banshee vs Rythmbox? I'm still undecided. Also have Asunder CD ripper which seems a bit better at finding track names, particularly on double CDs.

Know what you mean, though I think Banshee has improved recently. I've got it down to a fine art now, so it doesn't take long for the few I have to type the details for. Sound Juicer also picks up the tracks pretty well (but NOT for doubles!). You can't always trust what they find, though, and cover art comes from a different database, so sometimes you get pictures but no info!

it doesn't. you need a dvd ripping program, something like aimersoft or wondershare

Blimey, they're not cheap are they? All a bit of a pain, just wanted to get DVDs/Blu-rays I already own onto my ipad to watch on the move/holiday etc. DRM is preventing me copying 2 films. Pah, never mind, but thanks for the suggestions.

not cheap, but as far as i'm aware, the only viable solution. mind you, they work very well indeed, and can rip anything.....

Will that do all DVDs? That said, the 2 I want to do are the 'digital copies' you get to download when you buy a bluray, they play fine on WMP, VLC etc, but the drm prevents me making them suitable to put on iPad. I shall give MacTheRipper a go, thanks .

Yes I've found it works for all DVDs, commercial or not.
