Bit difficult to argue self defence when you shoot someone in the back.
The jury were also given guidance that they could reduce the verdict to manslaughter if they wanted…. but they chose murder.

As an aside, he was also an active supporter of the National Front and BNP.

Let's not let facts get in the way of a tearful send of for a Great British Hero.

I was expecting someone would post an RIP thread for this bloke, while hoping it would be someone I have on ignore so I wouldn't have to see it.

Oh well. Never mind.
Appreciate your input on a post you hoped you wouldn't see.

What a very strange comment to make.

I genuinely didn't know that
It is also possible to create a narrative that he set up his home as a lure and trap while he waited with his gun, in revenge for a previous burglary.
This of course cannot be proven.
But it is likely to have been in the minds of the original jury.
And so he became a hero figure for those who would like a war with scrotes, 'travellers' and the like.
Whatever the truth, he was not the sort of bloke I'd want to go down the pub with.

Ironically we were only talking about him last night at dinner, currently in SA, where home security is off the scale.

Unfortunately for all the sympathy he attracted as being a victim of crime, any defence in the eyes of the law fell flat when he shot the two travellers in the back.

RIP.

If theyd never tried to Rob him he would have remained an anonymous farmer all his life 🤷‍♂️

He shot them as they were running away...with an unlicensed gun and was an active member of far-right groups. Very difficult to find any sympathy.

I thought he was in the Tory party, or was that the same thing? 😂

I think you might be splitting hairs old boy, he got a lot of sympathy and national media attention back in the day

Perhaps if three scumbags with 114 criminal convictions between them hadn't set out to rob someone's house they wouldn't have been shot?

I'm NOT glorifying Tony Martin. He was a strange guy who, in all probability, had mental health issues. For which he received no help or support.

Equally, having endured a burglary; a home invasion which took my gentle, kind, tolerant, generous wife over three years and serious counselling to recover from, I have zero sympathy for the perpetrators who doubtless ruined the lives of many others before they encountered Tony Martin.

f*** them.

Some hairs are best split.
Of course he had sympathy.

Thirty years ago a neighbour's kid kept coming into my garden.
I set up a teeter-totter over a sunken bath.
The kid fell in and got covered in rotting shite.
He never came in my garden again.

Some of my neighbours found this hilariously funny.
In retrospect, it was a bloody stupid thing for me to do.
Fortunately no harm done.

I couldn't care less how many people have sympathy for Tony Martin.
He did the wrong thing.

It's all out there. He was diagnosed as having a paranoid personality disorder and had access to guns.

Tragic case but he was an accident waiting to happen.

As mentioned above he was an active member of the BNP and wanted the country led by a far right dictator. No idea about the National Front but one of his uncles was one of the founders.

Pure coincidence but the current leader of the NF shares his name.

Just curious, how do you know that?
He was interviewed extensively on release. Very odd character, came from quite a privileged background and was privately educated.

Not sure how "active" he was, but in interviews he encouraged people to vote BNP, wanted repatriation and suggested the country needed a benign dictator.

Clearly something in the family, his uncle by marriage was one of the founders on the National Front.

Attended meetings of both.

That said, he suffered from mental health issues. Unwisely UKIP allowed to make a speech at their conference.

Somewhat falsely described as a "simple farmer".
