The mobile phone is a pandemic. It is not healthy. I was on the train the other day and literally all 30 people on the carriage where looking at their mobile phones detached from reality, me incuded like zombies. It is a sad state of affairs as is social media which does far more harm than good imo
On the plus side you no longer hear people on traisn (mine, anyway) shouting a conversation with their fat mate, or shouting down the phone that they are 'ON THE TRAIN'.

Every cloud....

People have books and audio books on their phones so they’re not necessarily on social media.

This.

Suicide is not a crime and hasn’t been since the 1960’s.
Pope John Paul 2 was the first Pope to allow Roman Catholics who had taken their own lives, a funeral mass in church, before that, early 80s I believe, you had to go straight to the Crem or the Cemetery without a church service.

Almost draconian 😞

I guess it literally is draconian. Draconian comes from harsh Ancient Greek law which heavily influenced Ancient Rome.

I’m digressing.

I don't like the idea of broadcasters photoshopping suicide out of the narrative when other media outlets allow millions of trolls to goad people into suicide.
Not for the first and hopefully not the last time we agree.

We will never know but had they reported The Vivienne‘s passing factually, rather than the almost code phrases of ‘suddenly’ and ‘no suspicious circumstances’, that might have actually prompted other people in a dark place from taking their own lives?

Its not self indulgent, but when Caroline Flack took her own life, I saw my own daughter experiencing grief in a way totally different to when my mother, her gran, died, and she was only on the periphery, I can’t imagine what the Flack family went through and how they still feel today. 💔

The phrase " committed suicide " is a cruel and callous label to put on someone. From the bible I imagine. It should be abolished. The poor souls did not " commit " anything they sadly saw no way out and mental health support in the uk is pitiful
This is the best thing you’ve ever posted on this site. 100% correct and very brave for saying so. It’s a phrase that needs to go.

Ditto “fought cancer” having heard Paul Hayward discuss it. It implies those who die didn’t fight enough, which is complete bollocks.

Along with “a failed suicide attempt”

That outdated phrase can send the person into more despair. “ I even failed at that”.

Suicide survivor is what we would use now.

It’s not quite accurate. Committing suicide is not mentioned in the Bible. Herr Tubthumper is more accurate with the Ancient Greek and Roman times.

I suspect we agree on 99% of stuff. The important stuff.
But we both like to discuss difficult things about which we may not agree.

Yes, the Flack, and your own experience. I am well aware.

Best wishes, and I hope you have a good year, on a good trajectory. x
