Before the usual sarky comments about FD's klaxons going off etc, I've posted because unfortunately it appears he may have taken his own life.

In recent times it appears there's almost a media blackout with the word suicide never being mentioned, this is partly I believe to the extent of the mental health epidemic in this country, its almost like the media and the authorities want to cover it up, as the situation is at a critical point?

Suicide is still the biggest killer of males between the ages of 18-45, and will continue to be until the authorities devise a strategy to confront the issue head on.

Finally if anyone is reading this not in a good place, NSC has plethora of good people, never be afraid to make contact with any of the usual suspects or contact The Samaritans on 116 123.

I believe because the topic can be ‘triggering’ to people who might be vulnerable. Also an element of respect / decency.

Thought it was a racing horse.

The mental health thing is a pandemic, not epidemic.

The reasons aren't particularly hard to understand, but they're difficult to discuss since there's no evil foreign power or nasty politician or horrible criminal lurking in the shadows. We know based on data that if you give a phone to a kid, you will most likely induce them into a depressive life. Most people know that the more they look on their phones (and tvs, and computers), the more miserable they will be.

But people don't want to feel guilty about what they do, people don't want to give up their comforts and don't want to take responsibility. People are a lot more inclined to discuss problems they haven't created themselves. So the only way to deal with the steadily increasing influx of nine-year-old people with cut wounds in their arms and Tramadol in their systems is to silently shrug.

Do you think so, or are they just almost fearful or embarrassed about the amount of people resorting to this?
It isn’t just the media, it’s general life isn’t it ?

There a far too many parapets to stick your head over these days. Social media is a catalyst for people to be shot at. I don’t have any solutions but hope that people will get proper help if they feel susceptible.

Apparently it came to light he received a large level of abuse on Social Media after appearing on the Xmas Edition of Blankety Blank, whether or not this was the trigger/catalyst for the events of the last few days I don't know, but it again highlights what a horrible world we live in at the moment.

It is not a new thing.....if anything this is a better world.

But Social Media is a magnet for vile rats, and they are now free to be as vile as they want, thanks to Musk.

I can't think of any good reason to use 'X'.

Would it be unreasonable to call for a banning of posting links to X or equivalent bully sites on NSC?

Only Bozza could make that decision and, to be honest, I'm uncomfortable with it.

RIP The Vivienne.

You're quite right.

It seems that society regards freedom (to say what one likes and publish it online) more important than protection of those unable to cope with bullying and abuse.

We are having to tread a line with our 14 year old, who is on her phone all day.....with lots of limiters and suchlike already in place. I am not expecting things to become less fraught.

As it happens, without manipulation of the press and BBC by Churchill, with the active collusion of many, we would probably not have survived Hitler.

My front garden used to have the remnant stumps of an iron fence, sawn off to help build Spitfires during the war. Most of the iron ended up as scrap stored in warehouses. Do I care?

No. I am happy to be lied to when there is a good reason, and I won't shit the bed later if I learn the truth.

I didn't think that way 20 years ago, when in my mid 40s, and was addicted to openness and freedom of information.

In short, I favour more accountability and the banning of Musk, but I can see I am pissing into the wind.
It won't affect me, but others will pay the price.

May still be the case but for several decades the terrestrial broadcasters would not have successful suicide attempts portrayed because it could cause a spike on cases, likewise even unsuccessful attempts were considered a risk and should any character just contemplate suicide specialist advice would be sought on the issue and obviously the Samaritans helpline put up at the end of show.

Yeah.....you are probably right to be uncomfortable.

Albeit....
It means leaving it to the weak to (wo)'man up' or stay off social media.
Acceptable?
Maybe, if one concludes social media-driven suicide is simply another example of Darwin's principles in action.
And that is something I find myself uncomfortable with.....
As an authoritarian socialist.
Fancy that.

(I do hope you mods will have a chat about this, though, as I am sure you will  )

I don't like the idea of broadcasters photoshopping suicide out of the narrative when other media outlets allow millions of trolls to goad people into suicide.

The phrase " committed suicide " is a cruel and callous label to put on someone. From the bible I imagine. It should be abolished. The poor souls did not " commit " anything they sadly saw no way out and mental health support in the uk is pitiful

This.

Suicide is not a crime and hasn’t been since the 1960’s.

The mobile phone is a pandemic. It is not healthy. I was on the train the other day and literally all 30 people on the carriage were looking at their mobile phones detached from reality, me incuded like zombies. It is a sad state of affairs as is social media which does far more harm than good imo
