I watched Ronnie's giant killing goal only recently. I'd been to the Lewes v Three Bridges FA Cup preliminary round game in September with a mate. Lewes weren't up for it and lost the replay with Three Bridges then playing Hereford in the next round. I mentioned Ronnie's goal on that muddy 1970's pitch which I can remember so clearly even though it was 50 years ago as it's such an iconic goal. My mate didn't have a clue as he was only about 10 months old at the time ... so I showed him the YouTube video. Amazing goal and scenes!!

RIP

Some 13 years before I was born but Radford’s goal is one I must have seen hundreds of times over the years. Truly iconic.

RIP Ronnie.

A lot of folk don't realise that the match itself was a replay. Hereford United had already got a draw at St James' Park.

In the fourth round they held West Ham at Edgar Street before losing the replay.

I think they were elected to the league that year on the back of their cup exploits.

Fantastic goal and scenes.

Nowadays the goal would probably be ruled out by VAR for Radford's tackle prior to the goal and Hereford would have the FA banning them and their fans for the pitch invasion. Aaah..... how football has improved.

The parkas and the kids clearly wagging school, it’s the magic of the FA Cup encapsulated in one clip ⚽

RIP Ronnie 😞
If by 'wagging' you mean missing you're wrong, even though it was replay it was actually played on a Saturday. The original 3rd round fixture (at Newcastle) kept being postponed, so when it was eventually played and resulted in a draw they'd run out of dates, so the replay was scheduled for the day when the 4th Round fixtures were being played. Featured on MoTD that night of course

(I think the fact it was on a Saturday explains why most people aren't aware it was a replay).

To me that is the standout goal of all time for a cup giant killing

Apologies old boy, I stand corrected, I always knew it was a replay so took it as read it was a midweek afternoon, like Albion vs Walton and Hersham a year or so later 🙈

No need to apologise. Having made that post I went and checked up on it. Apparently the reason it was a 3rd Round tie on 4th Round day was more that the replay kept getting postponed. It was called off three times and each time Newcastle had already travelled down before the decision was made! By the end they must have been sick of the place. Can you imagine the fan reaction now on social media if that happened today?

Pleased to see RR's sad death made the main news, his goal is an iconic 20th century sporting moment.

I often think the same and it wasn't a bad finish itself.

But the thing with Radford's goal was the context. They'd held Newcastle at St James Park and McDonald finally scored what looked like the winner for the first division team in the 82nd minute. That Radford goal (and the fantastic tackle to win the ball that preceded it) happened just a few minutes later and was what the FA Cup encapsulated in those days. A shit pitch, and a never-say-die spirit of the underdog side and the part-timer who chanced his arm from miles out in a desperate attempt to get back in it.

I could definitely make a claim for that being my favourite ever goal … I was of that age when it happened.
