I for one am very sad about this. I have had some brilliant nights @ the Richmond/PP.

As a band it is a really nice play to play and we used to get some decent crowds along to see us there.

I hope that whoevr buys it will keep it as a venue

The problem with the pressure point was not the smoking ban, it was just poorly run and not a welcoming place to watch a band. Whilst the PA has undoubtedly been improved the venue itself remained an univiting dump which you would not spend any longer than neccessary in. Also in keeping with a lot of venues in brighton the promotion was absolutely useless, getting info on what was going was pretty difficult, try running a listings website and find out how hard it is.

What the Pressure Point needs is an enthusiastic owner prepared to put some hard work in promoting it as a place to go. It COULD be a cracking venue, sadly it's gone to seed and its demise has been well known for a while.

Agreed, I used to love playing there. Even though you have to go on stage through the crowd and the dressing room was a shoe box with a f***ed washing machine. I remember seeing my dads band soundcheck there(I was too young to be let into the gig) in the late 70's and it never really changed - to me it will always be the Richmond.
Although i'd not be surprised if like the Gloucester has become Barfly, the Richmond will become a Carling or somesuch venue.....

I think the smoking ban is only part of the reason behind pubs going to the wall. They now actually seem to be checking ID (which in the main wasn't the case 15 years ago) and there is less money about.

It must also be said that a lot of pubs really aren't that good though! Having said that ,I prefer drinking in Brighton to Worthing and you never hear the Battle of Trafalgar, Prince Albert, Lord Nelson and other 'proper' pubs moaning!

Nail on head. I'd add the great eastern to that list, a great pub that was always very smoky indeed but can still be found to be full on a weekday evening despite the ban.

brighton, actually
The pub in Eastbourne that I drink in, has in fact had an increase in trade since the smoking ban. The key is, like with change in any other business, dealing with the change. Every business has to deal with changes. They have two options, mange the change and get on with it, or moan about it and keep living in the past.

like he said - adapt or die. reading the OP news link, wasnt the Barfly previously called the Gloucester..?

and what made it go bad so soon after the change, requiring (another?) 'closedown for refit'..?

I think the Lion and Lobster is also one to include. That was really smoky the two times I visited it in Late 2005, yet when I went on Sunday a couple of months back it was still really busy. That had been a pub I really thought would be hit by the ban as it was SO smoke filled back then.

The Pressure Point is a shithole and that is the reason it has gone bust, simple as that

What the Richmonds changed its name to the Pressure Point, no wonder its gone bust.

Sad to hear, if the smoking ban is to blame, how come the Concorde, Audio, Freebutt are all still putting on live music. I see the barfly is even being done out.

Anyhow lots of good gigs, one of david devant and his spirt wifes best.
