He was one of the few trustworthy voices on radio. Always championing such a diverse set of songs and bands. You can listen to some of his songs of the year on the beeb website. Always well worth a listen.
I grew up with that bloke, listening to Pink Floyd albums being played in their entirety, whilst sheltering under my sheets. As the 70s went on, he was the guy that started to introduce Punk to the airwaves and helped to change the way we listen to music.
I have just seen that. Here.
I knew him really well.
John Peel gave me 2 radio sessions in 1982 which started everything off for me and enable me to this day to earn my living doing something I love.
He has championed new music all his life.
I am absolutely devastated.
Think this will put a strange mood to the British Sea Power gig tonight. I'll be thinking of him throughout the show. Can't think of a better way of paying tribute than to continue championing the music he loved. I really am devastated, haven't felt this choked by the death of someone I didn't know personally since Spike Milligan died.
