Wow that's a shock. Local (ish) bloke as well I believe.

Loved his books, read them all. Will be missed.

Met him last Wednesday and he was looking quite frail i have to say. Still totally stunned to hear the news though; he was my literary hero & a top bloke. Sad news... :-(

I remember reading "the Rats" to bits in the 70s...he has had a couple of decent outings since but nothing that gripped me with feverish terror like that one.

I read an article about him in the Fortean Times recently where it was stated he only ever had one paranormal experience,he saw a ghost in a sunlit garden, and now...he is one.

Very sad indeed. Read most of his books and they've all terrified me. The Magic Cottage and The Rats in particular... Oh yeah, Others and Once too.

The Rats- Read it as a teenager. Great mix of horror and sex. Also good was The Fog.

I've only just found this out as well. Absolutely gutted. I've had the pleasure to meet him on a number of occasions and he was a kind & humble man.

A terrific author who will be mised.

RIP James

My brother used to work on his cars.
Sad news indeed, I read all of the early stuff but later on it got a bit samey.
In the film version of The Magic Cottage we got to see Kate Beckinsale naked, I will always thank him for that because if he did not write the book they would not have made the film.
My favorite book of his was The Survivor, great book but s**t film adaptation.
