RIP. Like many on here he was a constant in my life. My Dad brought me 'Right Said Fred' when it came out, it was the first single I ever owned. I memorised the words to it and the 'B' side, ('Quietly Bonkers'), and would amuse (and after a few repetitions, annoy) my parents by singing them constantly.

I’ve got a sort of feeling, if we remove the ceiling……..

As a preacher I actually used it in a church service to encourage people to think about what they do.

The trouble with Fred is ‘e’s too ‘asty !

My main memory of him in my young days was in Shillingbury Tales. I really enjoyed that.

My Nan often used to play us his greatest hits album when she was babysitting us in the school holidays.
She loved that record.

Right said Fred/Hole in the ground/I go a bundle were our favourites I seem to remember.

As an aside from all the warm (and well-deserved tributes) if you hear that someone is called Bernard, you immediately know that they're over 70. How many kids are called Bernard these days? (see Harold, Gordon etc).

Mrs G and I once listened to names being called to collect their orders in a cafe - it was amazingly easy to guess (Mrs G is a Julie, another name you don't hear in anyone under 50)

As a young boy it was watch these and off to the marina fishing for mackerel at the weekend; cycle to the remote bait shop porta cabin in the middle of the dust bowl that was the marina. Nothing like growing up by the sea!

A great innings and such a varied talent.

As a kid of the 70’s I particularly loved his soothing story telling on Jackanory, and narration to cartoons.

A chap called into Radio Sussex from Brighton. His name is Charlie Casey said his Dad was called Fred, and was a removal man. It seems he knew the writer of the song, and he always said Let’s have a cuppa tea.
