It is as if he’s always been around, digging holes and generally keeping everyone happy.

It would be very appropriate if he was buried with a bowler hat.

Sad news, came across as just the loveliest man. In recent years I saw him a lot in a lovely kids show on CBeebies called Old Jacks Boat that both of my boys loved.

Lovely man, I was lucky enough to meet him a few times when Catching the Impossible was being filmed. On one day we managed to put him on a salmon which he hooked and landed from the Royalty when the cameras were rolling.

That's brilliant - I remember him for his interest in fishing as much as anything else. He also seemed like an old man when I was a kid, which is a bit scary. RIP.

Edit - also been reminded he narrated 'A Passion for Angling' in the 90s, probably the best TV series ever made on the subject

So sad to have lost a genuine National Treasure, Bernard Cribbins. It's a genuine shame that he never received a Knighthood for his services to film, stage, music and television when others less worthy demean their value.

A genuine tear shed here on reading this news. He’s been a constant all my life - I still remember all the words to Right Said Fred, my Children’s life and now grandchildren. He did 111 (one hundred and eleven) episodes of Jackanory, and did it better than anyone else ever did.

Why was he never knighted!!!

I was going to say exactly that. I've got the DVD somewhere - just a brilliant show that captured the essence of my enjoyment of fishing (enjoying the 'sport', but mostly loving being out in nature and having a few laughs with mates along the way). I've always wanted black labs just like Bob James's as a result too. Cribbins as narrator was pitch-perfect.

What a marvelous legacy and lovely that so many have happy memories of various aspects of his work . For me personally it was the comedy songs and much later Dr who , his tone of voice and singular delivery of a script with that twinkle in his eye was unforgettable .

Ha! I'm afraid I don't really like Dr. Who and I only did a couple of episodes. Everyone was very nice though. A good experience.

His wife died recently and I remember that it was reported that he was overcome with grief (it had been a long and happy marriage). I thought then that he may not be with us much longer, but 93 is a good innings.

He's been pretty much a constant all my life: from novelty songs and Jackanory as a child to Dr Who as an adult. What a career and what a legacy to leave.

Yes, he was married for 63 years, it must have been a huge loss to him.

Brilliant Actor and national treasure.
Loved him in The Railway Children and every role he took on he was excellent. Some great songs he also performed which I loved. Right said Fred was a great song.

It's funny how memory plays tricks on you. As a child, some of my favourite Jackanory stories were the ones about Mrs Pepperpot, and to this day I would have sworn Bernard Cribbins read them, however looking at his work, it appears he didn't!
