My dad passed this evening. He bought my son his first saxophone eight years ago on the understanding he would transpose "stranger on the shore" and play it for him on alto. He did so and then a couple of months ago played it for him on a soprano. Rest in peace both of you.

Sorry for your loss, and thoughts to your family.

The achievement of 'Stranger on the Shore' was remarkable given the competition in 1962.
RIP Mr.

One of my dad's favourites. I well remember the warmth and smell of the radiogram in my childhood and dad playing this, me as usual watching the disc which was a green and silver label Columbia 45. Brings back happy memories of family life in the early 60s. RIP Mr Acker Bilk.

I bet your dad loved listening to his grandson play that for him. RIP Napier Snr.

Sorry for your loss.

Such a wonderful and beautiful tune.

My cochlear implant allows me to have just music. Without any sort of gadget, I'm stone deaf, but my implant allows me to escape with just music, no interruptions.

My job is quite tough and it is the song I plug myself in to after a day on the battlefront.

'Stranger on the Shore' is the reason I picked up the clarinet at the age of 11.
I was determined to play it and managed it about a year later, picking it out by ear.
Never had the music, as I never needed it.
I used to play as part of the band, on the Med cruises, when I was studying.
One year Acker Bilk was one of the main acts on board and during practice I got to play a duet and jam with him.
A true gent and good sense of humor, gave me a few pointers as well.
I have thought of playing it on the sax, but reverently always play it on the clarinet.
Every now and then folk of a certain age still ask me to play it, so I do.

Fond memories of the Chinese Jazz Club on Friday nights in the early 60's. Acker played it a few times as I recall. The other jazz names took their turn, Chris Barber, Monty Sunshine & then later the introduction of Manfred Mann, The Animals etc. Wonderful days & wonderful memories of a past era that was available & so good in very small venues.
