now I know it is in fact a city and thats that. but in reality who refers to it as a city on normal conversation. oh i am just nipping into the city centre etc, or brighton is a major british city.

i am sorry but on here it does my f***ing head in. it seems so needy and desperate and just so far removed from day to day life in my experience. the bins and your council tax bill might have city council on them but be honest answer me this

for what proportion of your life has brighton been a city?

there are a few regular offenders on here and i would love to know what genuinely drives you to get so city fixated.

That's an interesting signature you have, Señor Spanish. In some contexts, the place has been a city for a long time.

I call it a city because thats now what it is. No fixation.

why shrug your shoulders like its a daft question. see this is the point, pretending twas ever thus or its oh so natural. if you genuinely think if something changes recently and you just naturally switch over then fair enough. but the denial of my point and this year zero attitude is concerning. this is how dictatorships thrive on people who will just go along with stuff and pretend nothing else ever existed.

I don't mean to be rude The Spanish, but if this is all you have to worry about, you sure must have a good life. Was two towns and it's now a city and what? But I will admit that if I go into the city centre, then I normally say to Mrs Seagull, that I am going up town.

The Palace Pier becomes-Brighton Pier

Even londoners refer to shopping trips as i`m going into town

Has made absolutely no difference to me on a personal level whatsoever. I still say "are we going into town?" for instance, and have never knowingly referred to Brighton as a city.

I always think of it as the two towns of Hove and Brighton make up the city of Brighton and Hove.

I refer to it as both, depending on which will irritate people the most.
Why hasn't the town hall been renamed city hall?

Makes no difference to me, but it's a city so i'll call it a city. Do you still work in Guineas and Shillings ? (I'm guessing you are as old as me as you have that grumpy old man demeanour)

*edit* although i do pop into town

thats not rude at all mate. its not all i have to worry about by a long chalk, just making conversation. i know things change but the whole city thing doesnt exactly sadden me but i just feel slightly annoyed about people sheepishly buying the whole thing - this is how states like the DDR exist for so long if you have enough people like this who will go along with anything if there is some prestige by association. the mentality worries me.

i cannot think of a single person in my social circle who would say city in reference to brighton without getting the piss taken out of them.

When I lived in London I never heard anyone say "I'm just nipping to the city centre" either.

no one says it about anywhere it was a joke.

but you would not say i have just been in the city there was nowhere to park etc etc.

its about the desperate need to refer to where you live as something more important than it actually is. its like the worst insane excesses of tony wilson when he used to convince himself and attempt to others, that manchester was some sort of global city on a par with london or new york. thats how the city referencers on here sound to me. thats all.

What about "Saltdean", though? How does that work? There is the bit that is part of Telscombe and the bit that is part of Brighton and Hove.

Mind you ... as a former resident of Telscombe Village, I find it totally offensive that Telscombe Cliffs gets away these days with calling itself "Telscombe".

For the record, I tend to say "I'm going into Brighton" when I go into the centre. I also refer to Brighton as a city in conversation. Aside from one other person, no one in my social circles was born or raised in Brighton. Maybe this has something to do with it?
