Right Then - What DO YOU KNOW that's cheap...

How soon is now?
I have only just started venturing in, not for any financial reason but I thought I'd check out what all the fuss was about.

I found some very good quality minced bef (really - not "cheap" stuff), but not any cheaper than you can get elsewhere since everyone seems to have offers on. What I'd really like is a convenient local butcher, but they've all shut down.

This has happened over the last couple of days and was so intrigued yesterday, I popped in again today.

A few other observations...

- Perfectably nice Pinot Grigio and a Chardonnay for about £3 a bottle. This was my biggest surprise along with the lovely Organic mature chedder.

- Lurpack butter much cheaper than elsewhere

- Bit of a wierd one, a not very mature slice of Parmesan. Very cheap, but not knock your block off tasty. Fine for cooking with though.

- Some very very cheap Serrano ham that I will brave on a homemade pizza, but the Salami looked a bit scary so I avoided that. Bit more difficult to add something nasty to Serrano I reckon, could of course be Serrano donkey.

- Cheap but so so tinned tomatoes, better quality ones avaliable elsewhere for the same price (on offer)

- Little packets of Passata (sieved tomatoes), bought for the usefullness of their size more than anything else.

- Thai Jasmine Rice, cheaper than at other supermarkets, but I can pick it up cheaper in china town.

- Shower gel at 12p a go. I suspect it's some random chemical that next week will end up as toilet cleaner, but if you don't try these things you will never know.

Lidl are ace. I used to use Lidl all the time when I lived in Spain, the choice of wines, cheeses, yoghurts and cold meats was cheap and excellent. I haven't been to Lidl over here simply because I can't be arsed to go through town over to Whitehawk, but there's an Aldi down the road that I ought to give a go to..
Although I would draw the line at shower gel for 12p, i'd even be wary of bog cleaner at 12p

Bougtht a ski jacket (£25.00) and leggings (£20.00) in Matalan the other day. I would have expected to pay over £60.00 for just the jacket and wasn't intending to buy the leggings.

I'm never going to go skiing but this is lightweight & waterproof and IDEAL for Withers.

Just been for a stroll around the block and as warm as toast now. Didn't need to wear any 'extra' clothing either, as in jumpers, vests etc.

I once joined my local Freecycle.

Great idea, but every single 'ad' went straight to my email inbox and so if I didn't check my email for a week or so ( quite common for me ) I'd come back to find it cluttered with literally hundreds of freecycle 'ads'.

I ditched that email account and never been near freecycle since.

I do like the idea & ethics behind it though, and if I could access it a different way I'd join it again.

I've got round this by having a Yahoo email account just for Freecycle. Within this account, I have set up new folders and filters so on receipt, it sorts the emails into Wanted, Offers and Taken folders. It easier that way to see if you want something on offer, and quickly check the taken folder to make sure it hasn't been taken

I've seen other suggestions to only receive a daily email listing all the activity, but you'd end up missing out on stuff cos some of it goes very quickly!

Yeah, I just found it was the students and rich people (ironically those with the most disposable income) who could sit in front of their computer monitoring Freecycle all day who were in the position to get most of the stuff. Had to leave it in the end. Went back on a couple of times when I needed specific things, but felt like I was going against the ethic of the thing by doing that. Still got about 4,000 Freecycle emails I've never been through.

I like your idea of seperate folders, but in truth I just can't be arsed with the sheer volume of the thing.

I've always found a good way of getting shot of unwanted items is either charity shop or just put it out on the street with a "free - help yourself" sign.

On the other side of the coin, I sometimes look in - free to collector - section of Friday Ad or help myself from skips for stuff for the allotment

I don't think you go against the ethic of the thing by looking for specific things at all. I think the over riding ethic is simply that other peoples so called junk is most likely just ideal for someone else. The western world should really be ashamed of itself that it throws away so much stuff that really has loads of life left in it.

I like the old allotmenteering slogan of: " What you can't beg, steal or borrow, you MAY just have to buy "

Albion 3rd kit - 30% off

got one age 3-4 being delivered to UAE for the youngest

...and they suck you in with these deals...and pow...also ordered the eldest the yellow/navy kit (5-6 years) at full price whilst online

Lidl and Matalan always good for value, also The Original Factory Shop is good for some things. The capital of value shopping in Sussex has got to be Burgess Hill. McKays, Peacocks, QS, Wilkinsons, Happits and Lidl all within a short distance of each other and also a Waitrose so that you can spend all you have saved on nice grub.

Freecycle is excellent - as with a previous poster I am currently seated on a proper office revolving chair got from it for nowt.

Panasonic TV

Just waiting for Panasonic flatscreens to be reduced. But they're not budging.

I bought a flat screen Panasonic TV from Hills in Boundary Rd, before Xmas. They knocked £300 off the sale price as I went into the store and told them that I found the tv cheaper on the internet. Hills matched the price & gave me a 5 year guarantee (as against the usual 1 year), delivered & installed the plasma on Xmas eve

Absolutely fab!

Spent all Xmas watching Zamora's greatest goals
