Here to stay, but the offside rule needs changing so that VAR stops making such a contraversial impact.
Change the offside rule and I would remain pro-VAR. The stupid, millimetre measurements are just a waste of time and effort. Bodies overlap... Onside.
I totally agree. My problem with it though is the authorities will take years to realise this given how stupid they are. We will therefore have to put up with years devoid of spontaneity and probably endless campaigning like Falmer and Hillsborough and safe standing before ‘they’ get it. Meanwhile the game is in limbo, and worse off. Lastly, this group called PAYING FANS are left clueless as to what’s going on and they more than possibly the players even are the biggest losers. Football died today for me. It really is in crisis and that’s not being overly dramatic.

What I don't get is that the added time in the first half was 1 minute, which is pretty much the standard unless there is a stoppage for injuries etc. But we had a lengthy stoppage for the VAR decision, so where did the lost time from that go to?

This was the first time I have ever tempered my reaction to an Albion goal and genuinely sat back down in my seat after the initial 'Yes' moment to wait for the VAR check as we all know every goal is checked. Most people around me obviously were jumping up and down and giving West Ham the bird. At least for me I didn't get too carried away but I did the same thing with the second one Trossard scored and then celebrated when it was clear it stood.

Really odd feeling not to celebrate a goal the instant it goes in, but I'm sure we'll all get used to it (even though I have never been in favour of it). For me I just don't think it's needed. Even if we are on the end of a bad ref's decision I have always accepted this and I love chatting in the pub in the evening about the ebbs and flows of the game - tonight I suspect VAR will be the main talking point, when for me it shouldn't be.

No it's not over dramatic and yes it has died.

I was thinking this during the match. No officials on the pitch and a horn goes off when a decision is given, it really isn't that far from reality. We've seen the decline in umpires decisions in cricket since VAR, and boy have they got some badly wrong recently, refs will just be the toyboy of VAR decisions in football. It is being sanitised and difficult to watch now.

Said this AND...why not send the game for total analysis at a lab and we find out the next day in the papers what the result was? Why not do away with results altogether? It’s ‘unfair’ when one side wins and as long as vast bloated amounts of CASH are being made it doesn’t matter.

Yes but needs to be faster. I knew he was offside from the first replay I saw....then about 1 minute later, while the balls on the centre circle it gets called back for a free kick. Far too slow.

We need a tracker to see how many points we loose compaired to gained as a direct result of VAR just how far back is a passage of play as I remember an off side against West Ham last season one thing is for sure with last seasons rules we would now be on six points and not four

We are a short step and jump from four quarters time outs sin bins and fireworks when somone scores which will probably be rebranded a touchdown or something similar with added time which will go into a multi ball Segway ........oh god it's happening again I need some tablets a lie down somwhere dark for a bit

When I was a kid playing at teen level and under, if we won we got a certificate or a trophy, if we lost we got sod all. Nowadays if you participate you get a trophy of sorts. Sanitisation (word?) has been going on for many years, but VAR at the top level just tops it all off for me.

Not in favour. Lets be honest nobody in the ground including West ham players and fans thought that was offside. The only person who knew spent 2 minutes drawing lines on a tv to be sure. To me they are just looking for ways to disallow goals. Presuming this is here to stay then the offside rule needs to change to clear gap between players.
I come to football to see moments like that goal not for the joy to be removed as we wait two minutes to see if his armpit hair is offside.

100% yes.

Was the correct decision, just like VAR ruling out Murray's handball v Watford was the correct decision.

Correct decisions being made by referees is a positive thing. How many points has shambolic refereeing in the past cost us - so I'm glad that we are to see a massive improvement in the quality of refereeing because of VAR.

Some days it will suit us, others it won't. Will just will take a bit of getting used to.

This is the problem though. Good refs used to be refs who you never noticed. Now it's the opposite.

The flow of the game is for more important than these stupid pedantic var decisions that no one even appeals for. We pay for the fun of the game. Var is taking some of that away so people can say "well at least all our ref decisions are bang on|" Who gives a toss about that when the football itself is being damaged with all this ridiculous confusion?

I want to see more goals, not less.

Didn’t see much wrong with it. Burn was a pretty clear offside - missed by the lino. I’d have been peed off if it had been the other way round. It was also pretty good knowing that when Antonio too a dive late on, there was very little chance of them nicking it with an incorrect penalty.

May as well moan about the 3 chances we had to put the game to bed rather than the officials.

I like the goal-line technology as its non-intrusive but when we scored our 'second' goal today I didn't bother get all excited as we have to now wait to see if it will count - VAR out for me!

VAR Today

Watfords screen notifications last week were excellent. Ours today was woeful almost non existent.

Exactly this.

Two things were wrong today -

1. No on screen notification, in fact the opposite - GOAL on screen etc.

2. The referee should have remained in the penalty area, instead of taking the players to the centre circle for kick off.

It was obvious it was going to be VAR'd - and not just because a goal had been 'scored' - the ref had his finger on his earpiece from when the ball hit the net. The screens should have indicated that VAR was in process and the ref should have stayed in the penalty box.

Hopefully this will be improved on for next Saturday.

I'm yes.

It'll even itself out over the season.

Today hurt but we'll love it when it goes our way.

My only criticism is that it's not clear when they're doing a check and when they aren't. For their goal it seemed there was no check despite it looking potentially offside. For our 2nd (1st?) there was a check.

That needs sorting.

There is ALWAYS a check. Some are just quicker than others.

WHU's wasn't. And why would they be? Would a 35 yard free kick goal be reviewed and why?

Every goal is reviewed, even the obvious ones, they are reviewed in seconds as the players are celebrating but as there is nothing controversial, the ref gets a quick ok.
If there is controversy that is what takes the time as they look closely at it maybe 3 or 4 times.
But they get it right and that is what counts.
My piss is not boiling anywhere near as much tonight after the ruled out goal, because it was offside, as opposed to my piss boiling out of my Japs eye after we have had the most ridiculous decisions go against us by refs that were even given nicknames like shyster, refs we hated, refs we shit ourselves over because they had our next game and week after week of the most useless assistants and it was getting worse every season.
Match of the day was full of it and so was NSC.

I don't like VAR, spoiling the flow and spontinaity of the game, better refs and linesmen are what's needed.

If they did something like the cricket I'd be happy, the technology's there and needs to be used.

For today's incident the goal was good . . . . It's what happened before at the free kick which was marginal . . . No one complained, no flag, so Play should have continued IMO. If you're going to start measuring pubes and leg hairs for offside and spend half an hour doing it we're doomed.

I'd rather have those shysters than the VAR crap we have now. Would it have made a difference to Stephens sending off at Boro the other season? I doubt it. But use VAR for that for sure, but not for fringe line decisions that give NO advantage in play. If you think we gained advantage by a whisker of an off line call then you have been sanitised.
