RDZ wants ball players and both PG & JM are being selected ahead of JV because of their ability on the ball. The West Ham tactic wasn't new, Everton did it, Forest did it. The response is to resist over committing against the low block and JV is the obvious player to allow a flexible 4/3 at the back, tucking in as a third centre back to stop Dunk & Webster being over exposed. He's the cleverest defender in the squad.

I’d argue that it’s pace we need at the back alongside Webster and Dunk or instead of one of them. Perv has enough to get himself out of trouble and make that last ditch tackle, not the case with PG or JM. I wonder how fast Igor tree-trunk-thighs is?

Naylor reckons the below.

Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi is also keen to add a forward replacement for injured Paraguayan Julio Enciso and left-back cover for Pervis Estupinan before the transfer window shuts on Friday night

What’s the reaction on gonna be like if we sign a left back but not a right back!

We have a right back, Tariq, who when fit, has occasionally been played by RDZ at left back. Presumably we'd be looking for left back cover who may be able to do the reverse.

"when fit" being the main problem here. He played just 438 minutes in the PL for us last year and has only played 2,884 minutes in the PL in the three full seasons he's played for us, I'll be pleasantly surprised if he ever plays a string of games in the PL for us again. If he ever becomes a regular for us it will be a bonus but we just can't rely on him being part of the squad.

And that's before we get on to the fact that he hasn't been good enough in those games he has played recently which is understandable when he hasn't played enough. If we're going to keep him, we should loan him out like we have with Sarmiento so he can get some regular game time and actually learn how to play his position again now he hasn't got that incredible burst of speed he had pre injuries as he looks naive on the pitch these days.

The club know better than me but I think we're causing ourselves an unnecessary problem by not signing a decent, younger specialist right back, especially if RDZ doesn't trust Veltman to start in that role with the way he wants to play at the moment. Added to the fact that Veltman is 31 and has suffered from injuries recently and our other two options there are slow midfielders 32 year old Gross and 37 year old Milner.

Yep, I'd go along with the idea of a loan for Lamptey.

I agree but, in the grand scheme of things, I suppose the really important match is Thursday’s must-win v Ajax.
Exactly what I said when the teams came out. Veltman will be raring to go on Thursday. We have to win that game. Today is a free hit.

I am assuming RDZ sees the Ajax match as more important than todays match hence why Veltman is being rested.

We seriously need some competition as neither gross or Milner can play the role against any pace

I want Milner to succeed here, but I never want to see him starting at right-back again. He’s an experienced pro, if he could still do it, he’d be showing that by now.

Let’s have him as backup in the midfield, he hasn’t lost his vision or ability to pick a pass, but let’s not put ourselves in the position where we’re relying on his legs.
