Perhaps Lambert will sign for them now as he has officially retired from football so presumably will just play for fun and a wage of course at a lower level.

Has he? Was it the threat of having to sign for Palace that made him decide to jack it in?

I'm not sure you get the concept of retirement.

I took it that the report on BBC Sport was from professional football as I remember Sully 'retiring ; then turning out for anybody that would pay him £50 allegedly, a game. Mark Lawrenson officially retired injured but played for Chesham Utd and then for a team in Malta and Tampa Bay Rowdies with Peter Ward for a short while so a player retiring does not always mean exactly that.
