I am sure they know by now what they are getting. Someone pays him (presumably pretty well) to be outrageous and it obviously has the desired effect for all concerned.

Context helps. He was referring specifically to Apple there, and he had a good point.

Gervais doesn't pretend to care about things whilst also screwing over sweatshop workers - to my knowledge.
