Retrospective Action

Looks in all likelihood that Eduardo is going to get himself a 2 match European ban for last nights antics, as UEFA insist they can and will use "retrospective evidence" to punish a player.

Following on from a conversation I had last night about what would have happened if Harlequins had beaten Leinster in the bloodgate game, I was wondering whether people think UEFA's retrospective action should be able to touch the scoreline/outcome?

In this particular case its not much of an issue, but if the tie HAD ended 1-0, and UEFA subsequently recognised that the only goal was scored by flouting the rules, a 2 match ban would seem quite inocuous punishment and wouldn't really redress the injustice. What do we reckon?

Does that mean Dickinson will get a two game ban for his dive that won a penalty against Stockport?

Oh and I think it is stupid doing retrospective decisions, as it doesnt change what happened in the match, and that set of circumstances can never be replicated again no matter how hard you try

I don't think you can adjust results, it opens up an entire can of worms. Ultimately a 2 game ban will impact upon Eduardo's chances of future selection, and Arsenal's chances in those games. It is also the same level of punishment handed out to others who cheat significantly.

The only problem I have is with the consistency issue. If UEFA do give him a 2 game ban, are they now saying that all dives are worthy of this? Will we see players being given straight reds for diving? Or is it only a two game ban if the referee doesn't spot it? Or if it's in the penalty area? If they are going to ban him, it needs to be accompanied by an update to the laws of the game to standardise the punishment for ALL diving.

Dickinson didn't dive, he looked for it, but moved quickly and contact was clearly made, clearly.

Eduardo blatantly dived.

if caught on camera blatantly diving then players should get a match ban, no changing of the results or any shit like that, just ban the players and eventually they might learn!

This is a very good point. The penalty for diving is a yellow card, isn't it? In which case, I guess Eduardo should get a retrospective yellow card - which is a bit boring really, but could lead to suspension later in the competition.

If it was a dive, then I think he should do really - but then so should a lot of other players. For what its worth, I didn't really think that was a dive, but I do think players should get more than a yellow for dives such as his second one, for which he booked.

I agree that you want to avoid changing results, but it will be difficult to legislate. If a team was to win 1-0 on the back of such an episode, and then UEFA (by banning the player) was to come out with a ruling that effectively says "that game was won by cheating" - then surely clubs will feel that more than a ban should apply.

Again, drawing the parallells with the Quins incident, where all sorts of complications could no doubt have arisen.

Exactly.
If the TV evidence CONCLUSIVELY shows that a player dived, then retrospective action should be brought in as a punishment. And I'd go further, and ban a player for 3 games (then 5 games for a repeat offence). OK, its not going to do anything to alter the result, or benefit the team who lost out due to the cheating, but the point is, if players know that their actions are being monitored, and that they might retrospectively pick up a lenghty ban for diving, then it will act as a deterrant.

Course its not always black and white when deciding on a video replay whether a player has dived or not, in which case I suppose the benefit of the doubt has to be given. But lets at least deal with the BLATANT ones.

Be better if they replayed the game behind closed doors so that the team got punished and not just the individual.

Somewhat impractical though.
Quite apart from squeezing in god-knows how many more games a season to be "replayed", what happens if a player from each side is found guilty of diving ?
