Restaurant suggestions in the Lanes

The red peppers can also be a bit lively.

Not recommending Donatellos I see...

Casa Don Carlos doesnt sound like my ideal restaurant as I am not a great lover of tapas as to me it seems like a lot of little snacks, like a buffet at a party and not a 'proper meal'

I like meat or fish either plain or in a sauce with potato and vegetables. I very rarely buy pasta in a restaurant because it is so easy to do at home and is dependant upon the standard of the sauce, which any fool can make a reasonable one of with the ingredients and reecipes that are available.

Well it's a good job you weren't the one asking for the recommendations then!

I've heard good things about Chilli Pickle but I haven't tried it yet.

Mixed views of Casa Don Carlos nobody reccomended Donatellos despite their connection to the club, and there wasnt one that received universal recognition as being the best. Sad state of affairs for somebody asking for reccomendations.

Do you really think so? I mean, no one recommending Donatellos is hardly a shock is it. It's reasonable (but no more) very cheap food. There are many many restaurants within 5 minutes walk that I would choose above Donatellos, including Casa Don Carlos. I would have recommended Don Carlos myself if it hadn't been mentioned by loads of people already.

Recommendations are always going to be subjective. When do a large group of people agree unanimously about anything like this? Surely it's better to have a lot of different places mentioned, so that the OP can do a bit more research if they want, than everyone say one place? N'est pas?

That new Fishy Fishy restaurant has been getting some good reviews. The restaurant itself looks pukka...but I've yet to taste the fayre myself. It's looks more of a 'special occasion' restaurant than a regular haunt. but not too poncey.

Another vote for chilli pickle, I would recommend the tandoor baked sea bass or the Oxtail Madras. Been a couple of times and makes a nice change from your traditional curry house.

Fat Leos is always good. Large portions for a cheap price, something like 2 courses for £6.99. The food is always good there, well it has been for me anyway.
The staff seem to be friendly enough and i always have an enjoyable meal there

Terre a Terre is the only sensible option IMO. No meat but their tapas plate is SO good.

Anyone who gives money to terre a terre since 1991 is an idiot. a foam filled mousse of kangaroos spunk in a wafer of jism for £2m quid.

It wa quality when it was at pool valley when Paul was the chef, like everything now its a wank pastiche of itself aimed at ripping off daft pricks down from london who are debating whether rufus should go to x y or z school..

You did omit the rest 'like a buffet at a party and not a proper meal'. So what you quoted would have looked stupid.

I wasn't actually taking he piss. It was just funny, because you are absolutely right. Sometimes it takes the obvious statement.

I agree with you on the pasta front and also the pizza front. Quite how anyone can charge 15 quid plus for flour, water, yeast and less than a hand full of other stuff is beyond me.

I think that TaT is good food but it is ridiculously over-priced. Rosti is basically pan-fried spuds and they're charging £14 for it.

As for the chaat. That's street food. An Indian restaurant in London will charge about £3 or £4 for it. And £14 for latkes - Jewish potato cakes and cheap fast food? Oi veh...

Like many on here, I'd go for Casa Don Carlos - never had a bad meal there. And they're brilliant with kids - one of the few places that doesn't treat toddlers as second class citizens.

Beyond question, my fave is Riddle and Finns, the champagne and oyster bar (
although they do all sorts of fish). The Thai tapas opposite fat leos (?) behind the Sussex is nice too. Hotel Du Vin is another good shout.

If you're after nice tapas then you could try the new place opposite the Office in Sydney Street. Highly recommended.

I went to Casa Don Carlos with my son, we were made distinctly unwelcome and the staff made it obvious they didn't want children there, despite it being a quite lunchtime during the week.
I've heard similar stories ffrom other people. In the end we walked out before eating.

Is the Jamie Oliver place any good by the way?

Yes, very good and quite reasonable. Good mix of couples, groups and hen parties. She might have to queue outside for half an hour or so depending on numbers and times, but I reckon it's well worth it.

On a Saturday night? Wife and I went there on a Saturday the other week......arrived at the restaurant at 7.45 and sat down at 10.15. Forget it. The food is really good but it's not worth THAT wait.
I really recommend it but only 'off peak'.

Very weird. We went in on a packed Saturday with a buggie, two hungry (and crying) children and a load of shopping. They found space for all of us by moving some tables around, took the buggy out of harm's way and made sure they brought food quickly for the kids.

We've been back a couple of times since and each time they go out of their way to accommodate us and chat and joke with the kids. Eating out with young families in Brighton can be a nightmare - unless you go to pizza places - and it was a joy to find somewhere pleasant to eat where the staff don't look down their noses at kids.

I just can't explain why our experiences are so different - we could almost be talking about two separate restaurants.
