I went to HongKong SiuMei on Kenny Gardens last week in NORTH LAINE for a little lunch.

Just had a simple crispy pork belly with rice and a cucumber salad but what I had was very pleasing. Gonna revisit this week and have a few more bits to give it a proper go. Would highly recommend for a decent cheap lunch and certainly for an early dinner where you can get lots of different stuff. Service was very friendly and attentive and the place is nice and CLEAN.

7/10 but that's just a baseline score for the moment as I only had one dish. Wil give the gyoza a go next time as that's a good barometer I reckon.

We shared the pickles and cucumber salad -- the former you'll get much better versions of at just about any Japanese joint, the latter weren't a patch on what you'll get in the delightful (and rarely mentioned on here) New Era. My partner then had the bao (I don't get bao) which was OK, as was my roast duck ramen. Plenty of duck and it was OK, but the rest wasn't really up to what you'd get at Wagamama just round the corner. I wish them well as they're good people, but I'd rather pay a bit more for each dish to get an upgrade in quality.

I nearly recommend Oshio but I think I’d read you’ve done that?

Funnily enough I haven’t rushed back to HongKong SiuMei. Not done New Era but that looks a proper joint!

Yes, should have mentioned Oshio which I've been to twice rather than Wagamama (which is fine, one of the best of the chains).
New Era is stunning value Szechuan fare. It can get a bit greasy, but there's several brilliant dishes.

First time on this thread – mostly because we don't tend to venture out without the kids, so end up at the same old places.

Anywho, as it happens, Mrs Bobkin and I DID go to somewhere we know – Fratelli's in Worthing – yesterday for a bit of pre-Cinema grub. It's always been OK (gone downhill since it was Brio's and has been VERY quiet on the handful of times we've been in this year), but what happened next was bizarre. Essentially, we ordered dough balls and, before we could give our mains (Mrs B going to have a pizza), we were told that they didn't have any dough!

So an Italian restaurant has no dough ready two hours after it had opened? We didn't bother to ask why or how on earth that can ever be a thing but, fair to say, we won't be rushing back in a hurry. Or maybe ever!

On a slightly related note, where is good to eat in Worthing? We wandered around before and after dough-gate looking for somewhere, but nothing appealed at all.

Never heard of an Italian restaurant running out of dough

Only a few recommendations from me from my limited experience of dining in Worthing.

I was lost for words – it's the equivalent of a pub running out of beer! The fact that the waitress didn't tell us before we ordered made it all the more crazy...

Thanks for the suggestions. We saw Efes while we were wandering, but didn't really fancy Turkish. Didn't spot the other two, but they sound good

I am always suspicious of the things like this and usually means that there is a pre-made element to what they are doing, wonder if they are buying in frozen dough balls and pizza bases rather than making it themselves!

I'm suspicious of pretty much everything in life! But even if that was the case, to run out of the frozen stuff is still pretty unforgiveable!

It depends though - even made dough could be a 24 hour prove so very feasible to run out
