Thought we'd try this relative newcomer on Sunday. Had good reviews and on a Sunday you can get a fixed price menu with some of their A la Carte dishes on it.

Started with a special of Irish Rock Oysters - every single one was gritty from broken shell. I get there will be an occasional one but all six wasn't good.

We didn't intend to go for the 'roast' but their alternative take on roast looked good. Mrs W had the pork belly and I had the beef sirloin. The pork belly hadn't been cooked for long enough so there was still unrendered fat but the beef was succulent ( although not as pink as I would have liked ). The veg were uninspiring. The greens were OK - not over cooked but the cauliflower cheese was very sweet. IMHO cauli cheese should be cheesy and maybe with a very small hint of mustard but never sweet. It was so sweet it could pretend to be a dessert. The carrots had also suffered the same fate - overly sweet. Yorkie was OK but nothing to shout about. And finally the 'roast' potatoes - I get they don't advertise the dish as a 'roast dinner' but really not sure about their take on roast potatoes. Very thinly sliced and then put into a mould and roasted as cubes. Then mustard over the top - far too much mustard. Can't say I was keen and they were also heavily salted.

For dessert a couple of cheeses, quince jelly and crackers - very nice and not a Babybel in sight !!!!

Over all I'd say it was OK - not going to knock your socks off, there are better places but equally there are far far worse ( The Connaught being the prime contender ! ). 6/10

The GLDHI and I are taking a few days off (magically coinciding with the international break - who'da thunk?) and have planned a trip to the lakes.

I've got the important bits booked:

L'Enclume - 2*
The Punch Bowl - Former Michelin Food Pub of the Year
Gilpin Spice - Modern Indian
HRiSHi - 1*

I looked at both Forest Side and Rogan & Co (both 1*), but both chefs trained under Simon Rogan for years and years and the menus unsurprisingly looked very similar to L'Enclume.

Now I just need to find places to stay (the car will do at a pinch, won't it?) and work out what we're going to do between the important bits.

Might take a fly rod with me. It's quite pretty up there though - so maybe sitting in a car park looking through the windscreen at rain will satisfy the GLDHI until it's time to eat?

The Set joins Cin Cin, 64 degrees, and Chilli Pickle with Bib Gourmands (Wot, no LFM?)

The wait goes on.

We've stayed at The Punch Bowl before and can recommend it -- the breakfast was memorable too. If you can find another night in the vicinity, go to The Midland, although you should spend as much of the day there as possible to wallow in its splendour.

Coincidentally I’m in Morecambe on Saturday and am planning a brief visit to The Midland.

Well if you are taking in Morecambe's home game with Bradford City, you could avail yourself of one of their award winning pies, constantly voted to be the best in the league.

Indeed I will be at this game. I’ll see if I can source a pie. Thanks for the heads up.

Tut, food critics, what do they know?

Manchester has just received it’s first star for 40 years. This is causing a bit of a discussion, some say the 40 year wait is a “crime” but the recipient of the star said “It’s just … they hadn’t found a restaurant that meets their standards up until this point.”

Come Dine With Me - 4 private houses in London

Not strictly a restaurant review since, err, it's not going to feature any restaurants and all of them are in the future, so it's not (yet) a review either. Let's call it a "Heads up of possibly interesting evenings involving food" post. This thread seems like a decent place to post it. :shrug:

When the GLDHI and I were in Abruzzo earlier in the year for the aviation fuel tasting tour, our hosts invited us to join their CDWM group. There are four couples doing it, and the first dinner is tonight.

"We all go to each others' houses are fed and watered", Riccardo says. " We then write our scores on a piece of paper at the end of each evening and secret them away in a locked cash box (I keep the cash box, someone else keeps the key), until the end of the fourth dinner, when the scores are revealed. The prize? We all go out to dinner in December; the winners don't pay".

Like the idiots we are, we agreed to participate.

Idiots? Well yes; Riccardo is an excellent cook, as is Janet (50% of one of the other couples). Sean 2 (there are 2 Seans, one being married to Riccardo) is a bloody chef. Us? Well, we're ok cooks, but that's about it. You know how you can admire excellent musicianship without it being necessary to be a musician? That's us - with food/cooking.

We're going to lose. Badly.

"Wine counts, right?"
"Yes", Riccardo replies. "Wait, err, no. No, it doesn't".
"Huh, why not?"
"Because you have the best cellar"
"OK. So food doesn't count either then. Because you're a better cook than us."

Eventually, we gained agreement that wine does count.

Anyway, tonight is the first night. 19:30 in Islington. At Janet and John's (No, I'm not kidding; and yes, apparently they have heard the "joke" multiple times over their 25 year marriage).

Next up, Sean & Riccardo, followed by Sean & Paul, with us last.

Us last.

I've offered the GLDHI the following options for our evening, in descending order of preference:

1. We're desperately ill and can't host - or we emigrate just before
2. We get take away from Nandine and pass it off as our own
3. We cook something that we really know how to do - say a roast leg of lamb and pommes dauphinoise, with, err, steamed beans. Preceded by home made leek and potato soup, followed by, say, cheese.

She's countered by offering:

1. We really push the boat out and try to excel at something mind blowing and practise like hell between now and our date with destiny.

I sense we're a fair way apart in our thinking at the moment.

Anyway, that's in the future. For now:

I would suggest the cheese is a must. Stick an artfully prepared Babybel on there and have pacman races with the wax. OR......

....open the best from the cellar that you are prepared to lose early doors. Something that drinks well without food. Get them SMASHED. I mean rolling around. Then cook a couple of ok dishes that you can execute after some vino. If wine counts, make it count :wink:
