Last weekend of Amex shop small (spend £10+ get £5 credited) so thought I’d try somewhere new for lunch today.

Went Curry Leaf Cafe on Ship Street towards the end of their lunch service. Few office parties in but weren’t too loud.

Went for the Pork Vindaloo Thali - went large as it was my Linner (lunch / dinner). Thought it was very nice, portion size just right. Pork Vindaloo was enjoyable not just stupidly hot, well spiced and a bit vinegary which was nice. The naan bread (garlic & spring onion) was very good. Also loved their mango chutney which had a real kick to it.

Decent value at £13.50 and even more so with £5 credit making it £8.50.

Would definitely go back, nicer atmosphere than Chilli Pickle has now too

They have a nice range of beers as well

Had a day to myself in London. Black Axe Mangel for lunch (crispy pig cheek donut, Dexter cap with chilli, anchovy and watercress on dripping flatbread and squid ink bread with smoked cods roe and two glasses of red) , then the hugely disappointing Bermondsey Beer Mile. It was so bad changed plans and headed back north and decamped to the bar at St John. They managed to squeeze me in for dinner (bone marrow, rolled pig spleen and bacon, ox kidney and mash then cheese).

If you find yourself at a loose end in London you now know what to do.

Sounds like you arrived just after a pig's autopsy ? had they run out of meat ?

As a committed socialist I lean towards the cheaper cuts of meat.

Bit of shout out for Block Bar in St James St. we wanted somewhere simple to eat and have a beer before going to the Concorde 2 last night. Wishing to avoid pubs full of Christmas parties took a punt on this place after looking at the menu on line.
Decent beers and really nice burgers from a selection of ‘plant’, ‘pig’, ‘fish’, ‘ bull’ and ‘cock’ (snigger).
What stood out though was six of the seven burgers turned up promptly followed by the waiter admitting that the chef had dropped the last one on the floor - so a replacement would be served free of charge and a complimentary drink. Quite right too you might say but how refreshingly honest and bearing in mind they had a party of 32 just about to place an order it would have been easy to make some feeble excuse about a lost order or worse to have scraped it up off the floor (I’m sure it happens).
With 10% NHS discount, final bill of £106 for seven of us (ok 6 if you deduct the freebie) it was great value.

What was so bad about the beer mile? Mate of mine is planning to do that for his birthday in a few weeks time.

I only went to the bit on Enid Street ie BBNo, Cloudwater, Sweden Calling and Moor. The issue was numerous large groups of pissed up blokes (stags, Xmas parties, whatever) staggering around being loud and annoying. There was a group of around 20 all in Santa hats annoying everyone in Cloudwater, being rude to the staff, spilling beer and when a glass got broken they were eventually asked to leave. They had to mop up all the beer they’d spilt. It was nice after they left. The venue is small, they dominated the place. I then went to Moor. Another different group came in there, all with laminates round their necks proclaiming something or other. They were getting on my tits and then the Santa hated guys started to come in, in small groups. Decided to leave. I picked up a copy of London Drinker and coincidentally it had a piece on on of the breweries and how stag dos etc are affecting the place. It’s not my thing.

There’s an element of this for sure. But they were rude and disrespectful to the staff and not really aware of themselves and the impact they were having; a group of 20 blokes in such a small venue alters the atmosphere significantly. Some people need to be understand it’s not all about them, they’re are other people in the world. There’s a time and place for most things, Cloudwater wasn’t it imho. I feel I’m dwelling on this a bit too much, the simple solution was to take myself elsewhere....which I did; everyone’s happy

Slowly getting saturated in Brighton now with Patty & Bun etc. Wasn’t that impressed when I’ve had Honest Burger before either. Be interesting to see how they get on

I’ve not had Honest before but they offer something different to Burger Bros and Trolls. I think there’s space for them in the crowded market.

A bit more colour to the above.

Had a lovely meal tonight in Balham. It's a very old fashioned italian place been there for 35 years. I've been a number of times and the menu never changes.

I googled it yesterday to see whether they had decided to get a website (no) but was surprised to see in the news that it's been operating as a money laundering exercise for the Italian Mafia for years :)

Still open it was exactly the same as ever.

This reminds me of a Chinese place me and my brother went to before a Millwall game. The place was a buffet type place, totally empty apart from a group of guys in the corner as us two. It had an odd feel about it and a rather threatening “food left on plates will be charged for” notices on the walls. But, people would come in, talk to the guys, and leave within a few minutes. Sometimes there’d be a trip to the loo on the way out. It was like the drug dealing you see on films. And for a busy match day service there were no queues; Sodexo could learn from the guys in the corner.

8 of us went to The House last evening, Sunday evening, week before Christmas and it was practically empty. We had pre-ordered our meals weeks ago, as they requested due to the “Christmas rush”. This is not the first time we had been there.

I had chosen from their Christmas menu, starter of Seared Wood Pigeon Breast, that was over cooked, very tough and almost cold. Main meal of Roasted Turkey Ballotine, nice but again cold, and a dessert of Cinnamon Crunch Ice Cream, served in a brandy snap basket. When we got to desserts the waiter apologised as they had run out of a number of the desert options. Why? We had pre-ordered all our meals weeks ago, they knew what we wanted. My Cinnamon ice cream was not Cinnamon, it was a cheap plum ice cream trying to be fobbed off as something else.

If they were really busy then there are some things that you can excuse, but they were not, this was just sloppy, don’t give a hoot service, no excuse for the hot food not being served hot. Really poor, we will be avoiding for some considerable time, assuming we would want to go back.
