nothing fancy but several half decent chain restaurants that do a job. A bit like a solid, unspectacular defensive midfielder who gives you a solid 6.5/10 every game and puts a shift in, covers a lot of ground etc. Whereas central Brighton is full of "fancy dan" playmakers and mercurial wingers who wear white boots and gloves

Hmmm. Central Brighton is thriving with all sorts of restaurants and take-aways at present at all sorts of prices. Away from your fancy-dans, just a few off the top of my head I give you: those two new Belgian chip shops, Burger Brothers, Planet India, Fil-Fil, a certain pizza place that I won't mention but several others that I will: Fatto a Mano, FrancoManco (sp?)
Booked in for Saturday night and looking forward to it. I will report back.

I understand Sing Li has closed as a chip shop, due to owner's ill health- but the family are re-opening as a Chinese takeaway..

Do you know what annoys me?
Mezze.
Went to Jojo's last weekend where they specialise in mixed starters and platters and that. This set up seems to create excuses for cheaper ingrediants and sloppy cooking. Greasy calamari in stody batter, weird chickpeas in a chip shop standard curry sauce and some very disappointing merguez.
The place was busy with families and I can see why, they are definitely set up for groups.

There's better places to eat in the area, including a place called Wheeler's which is the one if you can't get in to the Sportsman.

Can anyone recommend a restaurant in Brighton where l am likely to get a really good fillet steak? Unfortunately nowadays my gnashers aren't what the once were, and l just can't chew through cheaper cuts of meat.
Some will disagree ( which I don't understand at all ) but I've never had a bad steak at the Coalshed although their ribeye is my favourite.
Trip to Sini in Hove Street last weekend. As always, really good and a very good price. Mrs W and Miss W had a mixed mezze via a Groupon. I had the lamb shank. The mezze is great value and the stuffed vine leaves never disappoint. Lamb was good as well and comes as a very filling dish with veg. mash, new potatoes and rice - carb overload !!!

the kitchen is 'open' - you can't see exactly whats going on but you can see the chefs. i should have added i thought it was pretty good value for money. two of us - 3 starter dishes, 3 main course dishes, 1 cheese course and 1 macaroon and 3 baileys chocolate truffles (a must!) and a bottle of wine plus service = 80 quid.

What better to way to celebrate our first Premier League win ? Well not actually, more appeasement as got out of the Uni run to Lincoln.
Starters Seared Beef Fillet Rossini and Mrs Hut Asparagus, Avocado, Parmesan salad - very nice, well seasoned and good presentation.
Mains Ocean Pork Tenderloin and Rolled Lamb Breast - once again very presentable and pretty tasty - all washed down with an excellent Aussie red.
My only criticism (as always) is it is a bit pricey for what it is.

Really refreshing to see good quality French food, served in an informal setting. Not to say that this is not a stylish restaurant, just lacking in pomposity.
I thought the menu was interesting and varied and the small dishes, allow plenty of scope to experiment. There was no disappointing dishes, but also no single dish that I could rave about, although a few I would be sorely tempted to go back and try.
The drinks menu I thought was a little underwhelming. Nothing really tempting to splash out on from the wine list. A decent house wine or even some Breton cider, would be a welcome addition and would make this a real go to place for everything from a light lunch through to a major blow out celebration.
If you were to compare this p!ace to Plateau, I would suggest that Petite Pois edges it on food and value for money. Certainly worth a try.

Stayed over for an extra night, inebriated with victory, and dined in the Kanok Thai at the top end of Preston Street. Not flashy, not like the Siam further down the hill which is all about the looks. The Kanok is almost like a neat Thai family café. Excellent food, service and value.
Obvious starters of fish cakes and chicken satay superb. Mains of green chicken curry, red prawn curry, chicken and ginger stir fry, and a mixed pad Thai flat noodle dish were excellent. Two courses for 3 people including drinks 50 quid all in. Don't go there for a first date, go there for simple but excellent Thai food at great value.

Busy little weekend for me...
Black Horse, Binstead (near Arundel)
Having just got back from holiday and no food in the house fancied a pub dinner on Friday. Was recommended Black Horse in Binstead, just West of Arundel/Ford. It is a free house and menu is quite gasto-pub'y. Beer on cask was Harveys or Listers Golden Ale. Both Sussex beers so good start.
Starter I had scotch egg with local hens egg which came with a curry mayonaise. Served hot and was a good size for £5.50. No air and lots of sausage meat. For main I had Short Rib of Beef and Guinness pie. Pie was big and full to the brim, a lot of meat and delicious gravy sauce. Partner had pork belly which had excellent crackling and again was a big bit of meat. Both served with veggies and potatoes.
Overall 7/10. Reasonable value, good atmosphere and can tell all the food was freshly prepared. Menu was a reasonable size. Would definitely go again.
Salsa Viva Cantina, Worthing
After a few beers to celebrate 3 points and some goals fancied a quick bite to eat. Settled on Salsa Viva Cantina where I've been before. For those that don't know it is run by 2 chaps who used to do a lot of outside catering at various events around Worthing and could often be found with a stall in town on a weekend afternoon making excellent burritos. They moved into a restaurant with about 20 covers in town at the start of the year.
Menu is quite small, few nibbly starters, burritos, quesadillas and tacos. I chose here as my brother is recently a veggie and they have as much veggie fillings as they do meat.
I had shoulder of pork burrito and my brother had sweet potato and feta burrito. Sides of sweet potato fries and black beans and feta. Food very good, it feels a bit like they've gone slightly stingy on the meat and overload with rice but still very tasty. The pineapple and hibanero salsa is still excellent and goes with the pork very well. I've had the tacos before and feel they are probably better value for money in terms of the filling.
Margherita was excellent value at £5.50 and very well made, 2 of them on top of the beers consumed yesterday had me nicely done for the evening. Bill for 2 was £44 which about £18 was alcohol.

Was taken to Salt Room on Saturday for Afternoon Tea. It was okay, a much better offering than Terre a Terre's.
They do versions with tea, gin and bubbles.
A good take on it but I'm not going to go into detail because afternoon tea is a bit meh to me, I spent the whole time wishing we were eating the seafood platter.
