Maybe I'm really stupid/naive (or both) but how is that possible? Are there no decent fish in the English channel?

I guess it's demand and sustainability. For example the seafood on Ibiza is rarely local as there's too much demand and it wouldn't be sustainable to fish it all from the local seas. I guess it's the same for the south coast? I'm sure some of the fish in Brighton is from local waters/Shoreham but not all/most. I know there's some chefs who read this....any comment?

Not much but the French and Spaniards are coming in too near and catching it so I am told by local fishermen.

My brother in law is a local fisherman with many years experience and he has told me that this is the general view and a stance on which many MPs are fighting for them to preserve their industry and maintain fishing quotas.

For sure I'll let you know how I get on. Just looked up Alinea; agree amazing. Given its voted 9th best restaurant in the world I can understand it's a tricky one to get into. Good luck with that.

Alinea was going to be top of my list of recommendations - it's brilliant. You might like to also try Girl and the Goat, Smoque BBQ and Epic Burger. Enjoy! Wrap up warm.

Went to The Urchin last night with Mrs W. The better half loves shellfish although I'm nonplussed about it so it was treat for Mrs W.

Have to say it was great disappointment !

We both had a couple of Rock Oysters which were very fresh and the additions were good.

Mrs W started with the squid which was a little chewy - not the worse squid I've tasted but certainly not the best and very expensive for the portion.

I had Soft Shell Crab with Thai salad. The salad was nice enough but the crab was poor. It had been deep fried but the coating was so greasy that you couldn't taste the crab. Crab is a delicate meat and needs to be carefully balanced with what is put with it. I don't know if the oil hadn't been changed for a while but all you could taste was deep fat frying.

Main course Mrs W had Giant King Prawns with garlic and couscous. The prawns were good but the serving of couscous was both basic - just couscous with spring onions - and mean, just one tablespoon worth. Not being a great shellfish fan I had the veggie option of filo parcels with Mediterranean veg, feta and pearl barley. Despite not being mentioned on the menu it had enough chilli to blow your head off !!!! I sent it back and got a replacement with no chilli. The replacement had so much salt it was inedible so was sent back as well ( couldn't be bothered by then to pick anything else ). The side salad we ordered to share was extremely vinigarly as well.

To be fair, there was no argument about me sending my food back and they compensated us by not charging for my main course, not charging for Mrs W's main course and giving us a free cheese board ( which was a very nice cheese board ).

Personally I found it all over priced, small potions and not very good quality - we won't be returning. 2/10

I'm genuinely surprised by this, as I have only ever had a decent 8/10 meal on the 3 occasions I've been. Admittedly not since the May bank holiday.

Riddle and Finns in the Lanes is usually decent alternative and also do seafood, not just shellfish.

The Pass at South Lodge, Lower Beeding and Ockenden Manor, Cuckfield seem to have lost their stars

I don't think Brighton even has a 5 star hotel, so that doesn't surprise me.

That aside, I don't believe that any restaurants are worthy of any stars either.

We've been to both Tristan and The Pass. Both good, but we were far more wowed at the latter. I'm no great judge of these things, but I feel surprised that they've lost theirs.

Off to research Gravetye Manor now...

Mrs KK's annual celebration will be at The Jetty this year - mainly because I want to try popcorn clams and the tuna tartare...selfless hubby that I'm not

So we went on Saturday just gone, and have to say, really enjoyed it very much, but a couple of negatives.

On the plus side, the food was excellent, starters were crab croquettes for me and scallops for Mrs P, followed by a cod and crab dish (I do love crab) and Mrs P went for a whole lobster thermidore which she assured me was divine. The general ambience/atmosphere was also great. They have somehow managed the acoustics so that a large open plan area has that lovely "busy buzz" about it but without it being so loud you have to shout across the table for conversation.

The down sides, although we were not in a rush and we do like to take our time over dinner, there was about 40 minutes between starters being cleared and the mains appearing which was just a bit too long, and our waitress was one of those who didn't really want to leave you alone and was getting a tad over-familiar, at one point even asking "are you okay my loves?"

As usual with most restaurants nowadays, the wine was pricey (£29 for an average bottle of Soave) and the food wasn't cheap, but was just about value for money as it was so good.

All in all 8/10 and will be going back.

Thought I might try Union St Cafe - bruschetta, 3 course dinner and a cocktail for £28; and I'm definitely doing the Hawksmoor one you mention.

Ah, I'd not spotted that. Opening a restaurant in Brighton next year. Maybe that's Brighton's first star en route.
