Been living away from Brighton for a while so bit out of touch. Anyone recommend a decent seafood/fish restaurant in Hove or town end? Not fish and chips.

Went to The Curlew at Bodiam last week. The food and the service was superb. A little pricey at £120 for 2 x 3 course lunch and a glass of wine each, but highly recommended.

Thanks. Gone for the Salt Room first but Table 24

I'm planning on booking The Salt Room in the next few days. Two questions -

1. Why have you gone for particular table numbers? Any reason why I want to be requesting table 24 or 26?
2. How do I do that? Ring up the restaurant I assume, as you can't do it on the website.

Our other option is The Set, still tossing up between the two.

I've only been once, but wasn't impressed. The chef used to work with Heston Blumenthal, so was expecting great things, but left disappointed. It wasn't so much the small portions, expensive prices, which I can live with so long as the cooking is precise and the flavour combinations inspirational. Neither were the case.
And one last memory I have of the place: they had an apple ice wine (from Canada) on their list; I like to be adventurous with such things, but it was actively repulsive, and I question the palate of whoever chose to put that on a list.
In terms of fish in Hove, I have no idea, but @GuinnessBoy lives close by and likes eating out. I've been to The Ginger Dog which is pretty decent, but not as good as The Gingerman in Norfolk Square. Graze I went to a few times two or three years ago, which was a more modern style. L'Eglise usually gets good recommendations. None of these specialises in fish, however. You might want to try Riddle & Finns on the seafront, which is OK, but pricey, and a bit up itself. I tried The Regency late last year, and found it rather ordinary.

Our problem is that I like fish dishes but my wife is not a fish lover. Living as a child in Ferring her dad used to put out the lay lines during the winter months in the morning before going to work then collect them at night after a high tide which meant they had fish many times a week and she got fed up with it. So invariably we have to go somewhere that offers chicken steak or pork as well as fish.

Your welcome but then I am no food snob if its good I say so and if it is not I say so not just suggest places because they have the right name at the time and it looks good to say that you eat there.

To be fair very few people are food snobs on this thread. A number of nice places get mentioned but I think the info is shared for the right reasons as opposed to showing off.

Don't read too much into it. I'd never normally request a specific table either but Vegas Seagull recommended the table to go for and I blindly took his suggestion. The receptionist recommended a different table.

In Hove L'Eglise did have a couple of nice fish dishes on its menu last time I went. My brother lives near The Urchin and said it was very good, uncomplicated seafood and craft beer, exactly what it claims. Need to go myself but not been yet. I actually like Fishy Fishy in Brighton just off East St. A lot don't because it has a sister restaurant, is owned by Dermot O'Leary and tries to sell you its sauces and condiments after but I've never had a bad bit of fish there and it's cheaper than The Grand, Salt Rooms or Riddle and Finns.

Interesting that the 'receptionist' didn't think you had the gravitas to command the best table, maybe the fact that you expose this to us all supports this. Do you let the newsagent choose your paper also?

Couple of recent outings :

The Giggling Squid ( Brighton branch ) - fantastic food. Had the Chicken Satay to start followed by Lamb Shank Massaman Curry. Both were great. My only criticism would be the sticky rice dries out very fast - I'll probably pick a different rice next time. 8/10.

Riddle and Finns - it's a meh from me. Tried to get into the seafront one after trying to book but they refuse to answer their phone. So went to the one in The Lanes. The food was good ( fishcakes followed by Smoked haddock fillet with colcannon, poached egg, prosciutto & a champagne sauce ). Both dishes were a little over priced IMHO and I really didn't like the 'canteen' style seating. Might try the seafront one but I won't be returning to The Lanes one. Personally I think Fishy Fishy is a far better fish restaurant with a better atmosphere and better prices. 6/10.

Latino America in Hove last night. Only just opened and it showed a bit. Staff training seemingly going on continuously with the owner and the two young waitresses.

8 oz ribeye was excellent. Best steak for ages. Had with a salad and a side of fries but my god was the salad and chip portions TINY. And I mean TINY. Shame as the meat was bang on.

Gave the owner the feedback re this and he said they are still tweaking things. Apparently the meat comes from one of only two Argentinian steak suppliers who supply all the Argentinian restaurants in the UK, thus making sure of the highest quality MEAT.

Will return.

Also I note another place on Church Road opening soon called Skyfall - They will be Burger and Lobster specialists apparently.
