Reports of a fire in/around Churchill Square, area cordoned off

Word on the street* is that there may be a fire in the O2 shop and there are fears of a gas explosion

Heard the same thing - Western Road is 100% closed off though, buses being diverted away from the area.

West Street also closed off now.

A busy city-centre shopping centre is believed to have been evacuated because of a fire.

Two engines from Preston Circus Fire Station and one from Hove Fire Station were called to Churchill Square in Brighton at 8.33pm after reports of a fire.

Poice have also cordened off areas of West Street.

The Argus understands the fire was started at the O2 shop and there are fears it could have been caused by a gas explosion.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Police are liaising with the fire and rescue service team and have cordened off Churchill Square shopping centre.


"It is believed a gas cylinder was involved."

Firefighters attend Churchill Square in Brighton


East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending an incident in Churchill Square in Brighton.

Crews were called out at approximately 08.30 on 15 September 2013 by security to reports of a small gas cylinder which had caught alight in the shopping centre.

Two appliances are on scene along with a Hazmat officer.

The shopping centre has been evacuated and a cordon is being put in place.

Further updates will be posted on our website.

Nothing about O2 at all, but certainly a gas cylinder.

Exactly, if the gas canister was at the O2 store (why there would be ive no idea) then surely Dyke Road behind it would be shut off, as it would be well within the 200M cordon.

There's an O2 shop in Churchill Square, on the lower floor on the stretch that leads to/from the car park

Fire wasnt in an O2 store at all, so yet more accurate reporting. It was in a building site in the centre.

Fire out, no one hurt - centre shut until at least 2PM.

Well, not now - no.

Also a fire on Queens Road earlier which needed fire crews from Newhaven to attend.

I saw that in the original Argus report then the current one on their website appeared showing pictures in daylight...very confusing until reading that they'd changed the time to 8.30am.
