[Sussex] Remembrance Day Ypres and Muster Green

I will be at St.Marys Storrington and it is always packed for the Remembrance Service.
Always seemed to be old men in their blazers and regimental ties but sadly there are also a few youngsters wearing medals at the Service these days.
My late father-in-law was Guards Armoured Division and went in on D-Day plus two - he did the Kohima Epitaph by the St Marys Memorial a few times.
Never really spoke about his war years although he went from Normandy to Berlin and stayed for a while as part of the Army of Occupation - the only thing he let loose about one evening was having his 21st with members of the Black Watch and the fact that it ended his whisky drinking days...

I visited my uncle's grave in the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Kuala Lumpa in 2012. As soon as we arrived two gardeners appeared with the visitors book and the plan of the graves - all beautifully maintained. But it is a very moving experience and I admit I blubbed as I walked around all the graves - I thought I owed it to all the young men as they don't get many visitors. I'm not sure I could have done this on 11/11 and any whiff of the Last Post would have finished me off. I shall parade this Sunday at my local Church with the Scouts and Guides.

My eldest son (14) is in the Sea Cadets, & will be marching / laying a wreath in Peacehaven on Sunday morning on behalf of his unit. Hes then straight out to the main parade & service in Lewes for the afternoon. He takes immense pride in being part of this weekend, & also collects for the Poppy Appeal every year with his unit. We are a military family anyway, so he& his younger brother have been brought up knowing how important this date is to remember the fallen...I just wish all youngsters took an interest in it.

This is just a personal view and not intended as a slight on anybody but I think that for our last game pre Rememberance Sunday we should have had representatives of all of the armed forces present as well as RBL and I also think that we should have got a bugler from one to play Last Post rather than the Salvation Army as I say just a personal belief which oithers may not agree with.
Please if you disagree do not even suggest that this is anything against serving or past members of the armed forces.

I agree we should have representatives from each of the services.
Perhaps to make it more poignant fans who are serving in HMF.

Great that your lads take such pride in it. On my visits to Ypres -a lovely town anyway - the sight of the thousands of names on the Menin gate had a huge effect on British youngsters taken there by their teachers as part of a history project. Just wish that many more could go.

My young grandchildren told me that according to their history lessons there was never a war in 1939. It seems to have been taken out of the school ciriculum and glossed over along with Henry VIII etc.

I would think so but they have asked me about when was there a war but they are only between 5 and 7 years old. I am told, but again I do not know for sure, that their history starts in 1950. We went to a Christmas service there last year and it didnt mention the nativity at all as all the deputy head kept on about was feeding 3rd world countries and how unfair it was for us to have so much and them struggle. Generally in all ways as regards the 3Rs the school is brilliant but I would be concerned that the deputy head is a throw back from the student anti establishment times

I am immensely proud to have served my country.
2 tours in Northern Ireland and the falklands war thrown in.
The mood swings this weekend know no bounds. It’s the same every year. I will never forget the brothers I lost in those 3 conflicts.
All I can say, is that it’s a good job I have people round me that understand how I’m feeling as it really helps.
Big kudos to my missus in particular. I’m not easy to be around come remeberance weekend.

So the school aren't denying WW2 but just teaching 5 year olds modern history therefore your previous post is rather deceptive.
Personally I would rather a teacher that at Christmas (According to the religious types a season goodwill) taught children about charity and caring for others rather than a made up story of a virgin birth created to seduce primitive minds.
On a happier note am watching 'Journey's End', very good piece of film making and a good insight into the bravery of those heros.

I have a big dog that barks a lot but never vocalises in any other way. The exception is whenever The Last Post is played, when he "sings" along in a way that makes my hair stand on end.
