Does anyone know the reason behind there being 4 relegation/promotion places between league 1 & 2 as opposed to the 3 places between the other leagues? is there even a legitimate reason? just curious like.
[edit] - I was going to search and post the link, but can't get the search function to work. I'm afraid I cannot remember the reason off the top of my head.
I imagine it was a concession to the 22 clubs effectively relegated in 1958 to the Fourth Division following nationalisation of the Third Division. If you finish 13th or 14th and are relegated, you deserve a good chance of a swift return to the third tier.
I think it's because there used to be 22 teams in what is now the Championship. Four relegation places would be too many and they never changed it when they went to 24 team.
