Young squad ??? Webster, Dunk, Duffy, Burn, March, Lallana, Biss, Trossard, Maupay, Welbeck ain’t no spring chickens all mid career and over.

I’m not sure 24 to 26 year olds can be considered mid career, can they, and I think the point was young “squad”?

Well I have always been a glass half full sort of guy and think we are a top half potential team based on:

1.Our Play and performances from last year
2.If we keep Biss, then think we have a slightly better squad than last year, with options to sign more players.
3.Young players improving, hopefully.
4.We can't have the same amount of bad luck as we had last year

As a fan of 58 years, this is the best squad and team we have ever had, let's enjoy the ride and hopefully some improvement from last year. We will not be a relegation struggle this year as I think with the above points, plus we are better than, Saints, Brentford, Burnley, Palace, Norwich, Watford, Newcastle and should be competing to be with the likes of Leeds, Everton, Villa etc. Now where are those tablets?

Oh FFS - only Lallana and Welbeck are in their 30s, the rest are 20 somethings, mostly mid 20s. And Duffy will be off anyway.

..... and the 4th= youngest squad in the Premier League!

The goals scored column tells you how many you've put in the onion bag. xG is additional info. In our case it showed last year that we weren't clinical enough.

Not sure it does show that. Some great analysis from Statsbomb, which I shared elsewhere, suggests that it was our slow build up and the opposition's ability to get back behind the ball, that really affected our ability to score. Not simply a failure to be clinical. Hard to be clinical when there are on average 4 people between you and the goal when you shoot, the highest in the Prem.

You saw us last season. Ponderous transition from midfield wouldn't be a bad summary of many of our moves. Enoch should help this.

We’ve been in the bottom 5 for 4 seasons in a row and as it stands, our squad is weaker than last season so I can see why people would tip us for relegation.

It's not. We have a very settled young side who had a full season playing together in the Prem under this manager. We've sold one good player in a position where we are strong and bought a good player in a position where we critically need to improve (transition from midfield). On that basis, I'd say we're well ahead of many sides.

Plus the window isn't shut. It could get even better.

Dean Ashton on Talksport predicted Brighton to be the surprise package this season, maybe even making the top 6.

What a load of nonsense. Bissouma and Maupay are 24 while Webster and Trossard are 26. So none have hit peak age yet.

And 20 year old Karbownik, Lamptey, 21 year old Connolly, Scherpen, Ostigard, 22 year old Zeqiri, Moda, MacAllistair, Alzate, 23 year old Mwepu, Sanchez, won't be long before they're over the hill

And have some substance to his assertions. I was frankly flabbergasted that a Talkshite presenter had clearly done some digging and thinking about the PL outside of the usual toxic 6.

That was another issue, for sure. xG takes into account the position of defenders though. Fact is we didn't make the most of the opportunities we created.

Dean Ashton...

He used to rip us apart when he played for Crewe, didn't he? I remember a particular match, I think we lost 4-1, and he was incredible. Scored two or three.

He was ALWAYS brilliant against us.

Great to see him knowing so much about is now - I always think it must be odd for players who excelled against us at Withdean to see how far we have come.

Yes, Dean Ashton. He's alright.

I think we must be realistic if we don’t sign a striker we will probably be in a battle near the bottom, perhaps not relegation but the definition of madness is repeating the same mistakes, and we’ve already seen last year that Maupay/Connolly/Welbeck are not going to help us achieve a top 12 finish, that alongside versatile White leaving probably means we are probably weaker than this time last year at this point.
