We're often quick to criticise, so I want to be equally quick to praise.

I was really impressed with today's referee. I appreciate it may appear easy to say that when we've benefited from two penalty decisions, but I thought throughout the game he was really calm and assured.

And he was brave enough to make both penalty decisions - I wouldn't have been at all surprised for an established Premier League referee to not award the second one, and let VAR deal with it on his behalf.

Impressively he also let play continue after a foul several times, before pulling it back when a clear advantage had not been obtained - leaving it longer than many refs seem to.

From a quick search, it looks like he only reffed in the Football League for the first time at the beginning of last season, becoming the first South Asian to referee in the Football League since his own father.

If today was representative of his overall quality, he's going to progress towards the Premier League quickly.

I agree, the ref was excellent, he let tthe game flow, spot on with the big decisions. VAR didn't help him, taking so long over what were fairly clear and easy deciisions.

I thought all the officials did well - everything that was VAR checked they got right first time too. From where I was I couldn't really see anything contentious in any of their decisions if I remove my blue and white bias.

I thought the ref against Wolves on Monday was good too, mostly because I didn't really notice him at all.

I'd have said the same had we lost.

He was calm and assured throughout and, as I say, let some stuff go for longer than we see in the Premier League, before pulling it back when an advantage had not come about.

Prem refereeing has become a bit of an old boys club where the same ones stay at the top level no matter how crap their performance is. Today showed there are decent refs that could/should be given more of a chance. Might keep the current crop on their toes a bit more!

A more interesting point for me today was the VAR debate.

Had it been in place, Maidstone's fairy tale may have been over rather quickly.

Ipswich Town were not awarded two penalties that were. A deflected shot early on coming off a hand in an unnatural position that would have sent the ref to the monitor. A player booked for diving later when fouled. I think there was a foul in a goal build up too.

Still, keeps it interesting.

No they aren't.

There are the usual pricks unable to see anything other than biased calls. but plenty of other posters calling out that the Pens were clear, and that they didn't have the ball enough to expect us to pick up cards for fouls.

Did really well.

Could have booked a lot more Sheffield players.

Allowed game to flow, got the penalty decisions spot on, and credit the linesmen as well both of their goals definitely onside.

TBH I don’t think Sheffield should have any complaints…..
